2008 Infiniti G37s - Jetblack (Exterior makeover!)

The car is only 3-4 months old, and in that time it managed to get some severe damage to it. The car was taken through touchless car washes. That being said, it is still weird to see this much damage caused by a touchless car wash in such a short period. The interior was fine, so we just wiped it down quickly, nothing much to see there. The exterior was where 99% of the work was required.

Lets start with the process.

Wheels/Fenders
Cleaned wheels using mix of generic degreaser / water mix in sprayer. OXO brushes.
Inner fenders cleaned using higher strength degreaser mix and then power washed clean.

Wash
Car was washed using 2600 PSI pressure washer with Foam Cannon attachment. DP Xtreme Foam was used for the soap.

After drying the car was clayed with Pinnacle Poly clay and masked to get ready for polishing. After firing the halogens on this bad boy we were very surprised to say the least. We werent expecting this level of damage on a 3 month old car.

Here is what we were up against.

On the passenger side the owner had a run in with a bush. I think the bush won. It left scratches like this from just behind the front fender all the way down to the rear wheel well. We weren't sure how well this was going to come out, however; knew it would take multiple passes to remove.

So we started experimenting with different combos to see which would work best. We started using a White LC VC CCS Pad on a Rotary @ 1400RPM with OP. IT laughed at this. It did take out some of the swirling but deeper defects remained.

We then stepped it up to Orange LC VC CCS Pad on the Rotary @ 1400 RPM using OP. This actually did quite well and left little to no defects on the sides that just had the bad swirling.

Here is a 50/50 after trying a few combos.

We went over it again via Rotary @ 1200RPM using a White LC VC CCS Pad to remove some minor swirling left from compounding. After that we finished up via PC using a White PAD Menzerna FPII @ Speed 6.

Then after finishing up on the same panel.

Another 50/50 Shot on the Rear Trunk.

On the side with the bush attack, this took a lot more time. We stepped it up right away to a Yellow VC CCS Pad via Rotary using OHC @ 1500 RPM. Then working our way down to an Orange CCS Pad via Rotary @ 1400 RPM using OP. Then to the White CCS via Rotary and finally the FPII via PC. The scratches were totally eliminated (after a lot of work).

Next we go over all the other spots that you can't quite get at with a larger rotary pad using a PC Spot Pad. We used a variety of 4" spot pads, from Orange to White in order to clean up the front and rear bumpers.

Finished/Finishing Fenders

Finally we topped with 2 layers of spit shined Souveran.

The owner was absolutely THRILLED with the results, and we spent a little time after talking over some of the care that is needed to maintain a jetblack paint like this. He immediately ordered up a foam gun (with DP Xtreme Foam Soap), and shmitt in order to help reduce some of the wash induced marring.

Id say it took 30 minutes max to do the entire car. I'd do 2 panels, come back to the 1st, spritz distilled water, apply the 2nd coat, then go on to the 3rd, go back to the 2nd etc. Sort of an "overlapping" routine.

Are you using ice water or just room temp distilled?

Cold...I let it sit in the fridge we have next door...I think you could get away with using room temperature though.

Been tempted to try the spit shine out, but thought it took a lot of time. Guess I was wrong, maybe I'll try it out some time. Thanks for the heads up.
