Dipping my toe in the water

Well... did my first playing around with this rotary and some polish. I'll begin by saying I found this place while looking for places to learn to paint. Somewhere along the way I was checking out the Cutting and Buffing portion of the process and found Refined Detailing (01Bluecls), then here, and been hanging around ever since.

I've learned quite a bit on here, like don't use an extractor on Bentley floor mats because they are dry clean only. Who'd a thunk?

This is a Crown Victoria in the family... well kept but has the usual spider web type scratches. I used System One to do a fender and a section of hood... all I had time for that night. I reduced the spider webbing some, but it's not perfect. I'm still tentative about going all the way to "perfect" because I don't have a thickness meter and it just seems like it takes so long that I'm bound to be sanding my car to bare metal. Reading about it and actually doing it are two different things. Also, it seems that my photos don't show as much detail as I can see in person.

Any way, here's a section of hood before polish:

Same section after polish

Then, headlight before polish

Same headlight after 2000 grit wet/dry and polish

Sorry about the blurriness on the headlight shots... not used to the camera yet.

Comments are welcome, particularly on the remaining scratches on the hood. I want them gone, but have no idea how far to go.

Oh, process was System One wool followed by the foam on the hood.

Thanks for all the fun and entertainment gents (and ladies)!

Re: Dipping my toe in the water

I betcha the finish would be perfect if you made a few more passes, but I hear ya on the paint thickness thing. One of my cars was built in 94 and the clear is beginning to fade, so I really dont polish it abrasively if I can help it. Looks like you've got the hang of polishing. Good job!
