Re: Servicing GM THM400: Seal?
That seal isn't all that horrible. I've worked on that same transmission when I had my 95 Riviera and just faced the same seal a week ago in my fiance's Alero. After awhile that seal won't do its job as well...and that would mean the filter just kind of falls out. I take a flatblade screwdriver and very very carefully bend the old seal in on itself and then grab it with needle nose pliers and pull it out.
The new one gets pressed in with your two thumbs as far as you can, then tap very gently in a circle around the new seal with a rubber mallet or dead-blow. Even a metal hammer would work if it's all you got...just be slow, gentle, and careful. Mash the new filter up into the sleeve and you're good to go. You shouldn't have to change it every time...maybe every third or fourth filter change. Test fit the filter and if it stays put with a tight seal...don't even worry about it.
