How interchangeable are car batteries?

I was at Costco today buying a car battery, but they didn't have the one I needed in stock. My question is: can I buy another battery that is similar (in size and battery terminal orientation) instead of buying the specified battery?

if it fits in your car with the hold downs
has the correct terminal orientation and size
and has enough CCA's for you car

then yea you are good to go
