Re: luxury/"clear" tints on the windshield?

Update: I contacted V-Kool directly, and they aren't doing automotive tinting at this time in Florida despite the option on their website (well, I mean they don't have any dealers doing cars right now)

Anyway, I think I'll be looking into the Huper Optik ceramic, since it seems like my only option at this point. I want to keep a transmittance level above 70% on the windshield... thing is, a lot of ceramic tints I see only block about 45-55% of IR. This is much better than the 15% of regular tint (at dark light transmittance levels, too), but still, I'd like to have almost complete elimination of IR heat.

Oh and also (and the poster above me, thanks, you're right), it's not really "tinting" on certain models of MB... it's an "expensive and difficult to produce and apply factory glazing" that they use. A helpful local tinter explained that to me.

On the hunt again for some heat relief... thanks for the help guys, please feel free to give more advice/info if possible!

Re: luxury/"clear" tints on the windshield?

Wow, it seems like I can't catch a break. I tried posting on tintdude.com (a tinter's forum), and this one guy won't give me a break about how illegal it is, despite a detailed and carefully-checked explanation of my primary concern for safety and keeping the "tint" the same as clear glass - thus meaning its not really tint... : . He's really bumming me out.

I tried e-mailing a few places with this e-mail:
Quote:
Hello,

I found your location through the solar guard dealer locator website.

I am currently seeking a solution to the massive amount of heat which comes through my windshield. As such, I’ve been researching tints with high light transmittance levels but also possess high infrared rejection levels. I found V-Kool films, which have a ~70% light transmittance, and 94% IR rejection rate, but no one seems to install it in Florida.

I also found Huper Optik Klasse DREI film which also seems to fit my criteria – does your location sell and install this film?

Lastly, I think the Solar Guard might also be good. However, the lack of a specific IR rejection concerns me. Do you know what the percentage is? I only find a “solar heat rejection” percentage which is a vague figure.

I drive a 2007 Scion tC and would like to get the windshield “tinted” with the type of film I mentioned before. I was hoping you could help me, although I can understand if you cannot give me a quote over e-mail (as I’m not sure if you are familiar with the windshield size on the Scion tC).

Thanks much,
And this is one reply I got:

WHAT PLANET ARE YOU FROM?..... THIS IS A JOKE RIGHT?
Are you kidding me? What kind of business replies like that?

Jeez... What a crazy reply, that's freakin' ridiculous! The main thing is he's not even explaining what's wrong with your inquiry.

Re: luxury/"clear" tints on the windshield?

I won't be going there anymore, obviously, but I e-mailed him back when he sent me that response, and he did give a more civil response after that:

Me:

Excuse me? I found your location through the Solar Guard site… I don’t understand your reaction.
Them:

OK SORRY ,
your e-mail sounds like spam......never heard of v cool film or optik klasse drei.
and you are being too specific about you needs. solar gard film is EXCELLENT. a 2 door car is $169 4 dr is $189 a windshield is an additional $80 and I use suntek carbon dyed for that so it wont interfear with e-pass or garage door openers.
The rules in florida are 28% for the front 2 windows and 18% for the back I hope this is helpful. but you need to come to my store to see what your needs are. You cant shop for window tint on line you have to come by and see what your looking at.
Another thing that concerns me is that he doesn't even know the law in this state. The max in the rear two windows is 15%, not 18%... you would think he should know that .

But yea, I would expect anyone who does something for a living to know what is going on in their field... but I guess you can't expect that with everyone obviously. I'm sure we all have experience with this - just look at your local neighborhood "detailer."

Anyway, I'm going to call some places I haven't e-mailed already (when I get a chance sometime later this week).

I guess I'm being too technical in my e-mails... these guys make me feel embarrassed. Next time I ask anyone I'll just do it on the phone (using e-mail with tint places is making me feel like an uber-nerd, especially since such few tint places use the internet to begin with)... and be much more general and ignorant-sounding I guess.

I also think I'm just going to try to get a note/prescription whatever from my eye doctor. It seems like the only way to stop getting all this legal concern despite the clear color (although its looking like I may have to go up to maybe 60 or 50% in some ceramic, since it is so, so hard to get these advanced tints around here! I would say its like trying to find a Ferrari dealership... but I have one of those about 30 minutes away from me, but I can't even find this tint )

Are you joking? Please, the person who replied your email should be embarrased. This guy doesn't know how to use capitals, doesn't have any grammar skills, can't spell, and seems very unprofessional.

This guy is the one that's kidding! If you're being too specific about "you" needs, that tells me that he doesn't know what the hell he's doing. In other words, take what I got because its the best, trust me!
I'd go out of my way to call the BBB and file a complaint, attaching the initial response you got from this business. Definitely not a way to do business, even if he thought it was spam. I'd also send the email and file a complaint with SolarGard. I'm sure they don't want to do business with people like that.

Like another poster said, don't get your hopes down. Be glad you didn't go with that guy. Its your car, you should put on what you want, not what others say!
