yooo! Tribecas are fun to drive. On par with an X5 for a whole lot less. It's one of the few SUVs I'd own. The Outback is a better choice, though.

Re: winter SUV

Subarus don't appeal to everybody...my wife and I were genuinely disappointed with our Outback and the WRX, to the point that they just sat around unused until I finally sold them. That's not a slam at Subies (which I really wanted to like), just another case of how people differ on this stuff.

I kinda think Booyah has it right with the Lexus suggestion.

Re: winter SUV

Here in Minnesota, the 'luxury' minded guys either drive the Lexus LX470 or a Range Rover. I never thought too much about these two SUVs until I got to drive them on a regular basis (all detailing clients). I was 100% impressed with both the Lexus and Range Rovers in quality, power, interior design, etc.

Many of these guys also drive Porsches in the summer and seem to have tastes similar to your dad's. +3 with Booyah and Accumulator on the Lexus.

Otherwise, find a Range Rover HSE Supercharged and call it a day.

Heh heh, I'd call Range Rover ownership a day alright...a day spent in the service dept.

The person I sold my dad's Audi A6 4.2 to traded it in on a Lexus SUV. Not what *I* would've done, but she's very happy with the Lexus and its minimal service needs.

Re: winter SUV

Buick Enclave.

We test drove this and an audi Q7 and the audi had a much rougher ride and the Buick really nice.

Re: winter SUV

My g/f's mother traded in her Tahoe last year on a GX470. I've driven it many times and am always impressed with how balanced it feels. Plus the suspension has adjustable settings so you can drive in confidence in the weather.

Re: winter SUV

I would rethink the escalade, that platform really has excellent service records, my wife has a yukon XL and in 5 years it has never given us an issue.

A year or so ago i would have said x5, but they got fugly recently. Has he driven a new MDX or RDX?

Good call! I forgot about the new MDX. I haven't driven one, but they have got to be one of the most aggressive looking SUVs on the road now. The Escalade and Hummer H2 would also be good options.
