The most recent paint trend - Flat Black

Blehhh...

I just got my Nismo front bumper installed and painted the 2 inlets flat black and matched my grill with flat black as well, leaving the Infiniti logo chrome... Now I am very much considering powdercoating my 18 inch OEM wheels to match the stealth mode I'm trying to go for. (at least until I get my 19 inch Mayas) I'm also gonna get the black headlight overlays batmobile style, and smoke the rear tailights...
My car is a brilliant silver by the way... would flat blacking out the wheels be overkill or just perfect??
by the way, the question earlier.. has anyone done their whole G coupe in Flat Black... if so... PICS PLEASE???
that damn CLS looks like licorice candy, I jus wanna bite into it!!!!!!

Regarding "losing the lines", you don't lose the lines in a graphite or silver car or even a metallic black. Car manufacturers choose silver for most of their ads for this very reason.

Re: The most recent paint trend - Flat Black

Although I don't care for it so much, I think that the flat black paint can have its place. Albeit limited. Since, you mentioned the primered civic look, this paint makes me think of Skunk2 an import tuuner performance parts manufacturer. This "stealth black" finish is sort of a trademark of theirs. This trend was interresting when it was limited to show vehicles (imports, etc) or vehicles going for a nestalic flare (think rat-racers). As far as being used on high end BMW's or Rolls', the effect is lost on me. I would much rather see an intriging new color or something with so much depth that you just want to stop and stare.

I absolutely love it. I am in the minority I know, but I think that it is gorgeous and stealth looking.

I don't really like it. It seems like the car is still "under construction". It looks alright on the Rolls Royce tho.

Re: The most recent paint trend - Flat Black

I think it makes the car look kinda mean. Looks tough to me. Would I want a modern car with it? Probably not, but I do like the look. Now if I had an old Hot Rod or something....MAYBE. Perhaps it's the lighting, but that CLS looks wicked to me.

Kinda looks like it needs a good dose off lacquer to bring the shine out IMO.

Plus, you gotta be careful - one hint off polish, and it does actually shine ; so that's something else you won't be able to do

Re: The most recent paint trend - Flat Black

I guess the flat black gives the Benz a "dramatic" look to it, but I'm really not feeling it.

It looks like a plastic toy. I don't much care for it. I have noticed that more people are gettng their show cars in flat colors and I think it looks cheap and unfinished.

I would consider the above cars to be more of a matte black.
