Supra

I wouldn't mind buying a toyota supra but am unsure about owning a car that is no longer in production. Is it hard to get parts for cars that are no longer being made?

Anything else I should know?

I previously owned a 93.5 Supra Twin Turbo. If you needed to buy some replacement OEM parts, usually it has to be ordered and it might take a few days. If I'm not mistaken, the Supra is still being produced in Japan, it was only discontinuted in North America after 1998.

Those cars are really reliable and with proper care, it should not give you any problems.

I love Supras and hopefully I can buy another one 5 years from now, but check with your insurance company first. These sports cars can be very expensive to drive.

Say I have the supra sitting in a garage for a few months while I work on it.

Do I still have to have insurance on it? or only if I'm driving it?

Supras are NOT ricers. They are one bad a.. sports car. Unmodified, they have a good 320 horsepower. They can very well smoke a brand new Mustang, Camaro and maybe even a Vette. Now modified, they will kill almost anything. Huy, a longtime member here, has one that has over 500 hp. Some of his friends have Supras with upwards of 700 hp. Wow! A Z06 Vette, watch out because you are about to get smoked. Laters

320 hp base for the TT models. My 1999 SS will SMOKE the crap out of the car starting off, specs show it's more than a full second gap to 60 mph. On the highway if we start nose to nose the Supra will pull away faster because of the spooled up turbos.

They are very nice and very fast cars. The handle in Supra's is something to behold, even with the stock suspension (the condition of the used Supra suspensions I dont know).

Buy a stock TT Supra, you know what your starting with.

The handling of the Supra is indeed what sets it apart from the other discontinued cars here such as the 300 ZX (not anymore though) the 3000GT and RX7.

Supras are sweet. However if you just want a toy then get an 94 RX7 it would be much cheaper and the handling of the RX7 is insane even stock.

If I had to choose, I would take a Twin Turbo 1994 RX-7 over the Supra ANYDAY of the week, the handle is even better. I like the exterior, interior, rims and just aout everything in that car. It will probaly be my next car.

Thumbs up

Intel,

Here's a tip for you if you want to read up more on the Supra:

http://www.supraforums.com

http://www.mkiv.com

These two sites are the BEST sites for Supra information. Very knowledgeable enthusiasts, and all the information pertaining to specs, mods, tips, etc you can think of.

As for worrying about the quality of a Supra, the engine is BULLET PROOF. As for parts, they are not difficult to get ahold of, granted most dealerships won't have a lot of stuff on hand, but most can be ordered and arrive in 1-2 days. In terms of maintenance and problems, none pop up as major. You will have your major service done at 60k, then that's the biggest thing you'd do, other than replacing the twin turbos with a big single. Muwahahahaha >

Joed1228 sounds like a Camaro enthusiast here, so I won't go on and on about which car is faster. If you can find a Supra TT in your area, take one for a drive... As for the Rx7 yes, it handles like a charm, but the maintenance and overheating problems with that car is not its strength.

As for the price of a Supra, a 93/94 will tend to fall in the range of $20-25K for one with normal milage for those years. 95s usually are found for $25-26K depending on condition. 96 are rare because they were only produced with automatic trannies for that year. 97/98 are much sought after, but extremely limited in number. Finding a 6speed is definitely rare as well. Market price is definitely higher than what KBB has published.
