...for this poor, neglected engine out of a 7-series BMW. I found this on another board and thought I'd share. Car specs call for full synthetic and it was subjected to dino oil for 60k miles without changing the oil or filter. Even sadder, the guy sold it like this and it didn't lock up till a new owner bought it who got stuck with the bill for a new engine.

I change mine every year or 15k miles whichever first. Hey I am just following the recommended intervals. 51k and everything is fine, ooooh, I should not have said that!

I gotta confess, my second car was a '78 Toyota Corolla liftback and I went *forever* w-o changing the oil in that thing. I honestly don't remember how long it was, but it did live to over 200k. It was the tranny that finally went on it. Of course, there's a big difference between an old, beater Toyota and this BMW. These days I stay on top of the changes and use Mobil 1 oil and filter.

Even if you do run synthetic oil, acid and other things can build up in the engine and can cause harm and a good oil filter only last 5k at the most (K&n filter even less) . Full synthetic oil can run for 15k but I would not recommend it because of the build up in acid and other things. If you are not hard on the engine you don’t need synthetic oil but if you are like me then you need synthetic oil.
One thing about keeping oil good between changes is replacing the PCV valve every so often.
If you are switching to dino oil to synthetic oil you have to change the oil shortly after because synthetic oil really cleans the deposits off the engine.

When I switched to synthetic I did a couple of changes with a syn/dino mix and fairly short change interval to help clean things out. I haven't tried the K&N filter and don't really know anything about it. Why are you saying it's such a short duty unit?

I went back and read the history of the situation; it was an off-lease car that the original owner never took care of. The current owner drove it 34k before the engine gave up with about 111k on it; she was lucky to make it that far. She did do a lot of things right, including taking the car to a BMW dealer before purchasing to have it checked over, but she didn't have the oil pan dropped to check for sludge buildup.

At least the new owner has an excuse to build up the motor a bit.

But it does suck that people don't take care fo their cars!

Geez! Couldn't they rebuild that though, vs a new motor? Maybe it's not cost-effective though. Seems like it might just need a cleaning and a new valvetrain?

FYI on synthetic, but heat in the oil can help burn off acids, as they exist in water. Heat will remove the water from oil. Also, ones made to go 15k miles have more additives to combat those things for a longer time.

She got a newer model used motor for around 4500 installed.
