What is the best way to make sure your car doesnt get stolen (besides leaving it in your garage 24/7)

dont put anytihng flashy on your car (IE-rims). Dont place racing stickers on your vehicle as this may indicate a supercharged engine and bigbux to a thief. Tint your windows so at night you cant tell if someone is in the car (this also means tinting the sides illegally). If u dont have an alarm at LEAST place a blinking light on the dash...if i were a thief and saw that light i would think an alarm and move on to an easier target. Get that new fangled club that locks the wheel and brake (not being able to move the brake pedal will make sure the car cant be placed in "gear). Also something that may be a tad expensive but worth the investment is the "lo-jack".

An alarm with a pager remote is nice. Some of the quality high-end miles have a one mile+ range outdoors which usually equates to about 300-500' through walls. But, if it's down the street from your house or outside your office, you'll know that the car's in trouble and there will be no mistaking that it's your car going off....

best things are to keep the outside look of your car as normal as possible and to avoid leaving valuables in plain sight - this includes radar detectors, cds, etc.

for the pager alarm, do you really want to try taking on a car thief by yourself? my neighbor recently surprised a thief that was breaking into his car. After having a gun pointed at his head, he's moved to an apartment with a garage and decided to just walk away in the future.

i saw a show on either the learning channel or the discovery channel about auto theft. they talked to a former auto thief who said the more anti-theft devices you have, the more it'll deter a thief. like he recommended a car alarm, the Club, and that brake pedal lock. if you have a car alarm, if possible, install a backup battery that the alarm can run off in case the main battery is disabled. also, you can install a switch that disables the fuel pump or some other important part of the car. but i think that is only to prevent a thief from taking your car, not breaking into it.

i guess to prevent a thief from breaking in and taking your stereo and stuff, i think it's best to make your stereo as stealthy as possible. also hide things like your CD carrying case and such, either put them under the seat or in the trunk.

of course, there is the usual advice: always lock your car. don't leave the car with the keys in the igntion and still running. be careful where you park it, etc etc.

Keeping a low profile is best to prevent most break ins.

As far as preventing actual car theft I find that a simple kill switch made from a few bucks in parts is the best bet. By routing an ignition switch wire, fuel pump wire or clutch start wire through a simple hidden switch your vehicle is rendered totally immoble. I have seen rigs that required the cigarette lighter to be activated in order to start the vehicle, and the use of a magnetic reed switch (as used in home alarms on doors/windows) hidden behind the dash. One swipe of a magnet (maybe attached to a keychain) closes the circuit and allows the car to be started.

I'm not going to mention where my switch is located

but creativity helps and it doesn't take much. I guess it can still be bypassed but I don't think many thieves are willing to rewire my entire ignition system to take my car.

i remember a movie from the '80s (maybe Robocop?) where they showed these anti-theft devices. i think one would capture the thief in the seat and basically electrocute him. and i think some company had made a device that basically placed a flamethrower underneath the door and would fry a thief trying to break in.

but i can just see the lawsuits from those devices....
