They have LOJACK in New Orleans and a cop friend tells me the average return time of your car when stolen is 12 minutes after you you call LO JACK.

From what I understand it is installed by stereo resellers and such.

I always ask how many times have you ever had a car stolen? I will use my onstar and hope they do not hide in parking garages which I do not think they will.

Dude - if you're talking NYC - Lojack is almost a *must*.

Not so much because of recovery (although, recovery is supposed to be pretty cool) - but because of the savings on theft insurance.

If you only have liability insurance - then you don't get the savings, and you're only getting the protection. If you've got collision - anywhere from 10-20% of your premium is going to disappear. Considering how high premiums in NYC are - you can make back the cost of Lojack within a year, in some cases - and get the peace of mind for free.

I have a similar system in my MB (part of an Onstar like system, with stolen car recovery) and if it didn't come with it, I would definitely have installed it anyway.

My $0.02,
-J

LoJack is a great product. If you have it and your car is stolen, I would say 99.9% of the time you are going to get your car back.

The only problem with LoJack is the coverage area. If your car is stolen in an area with coverage, but they drive it into an area without coverage then you are screwed because they can't track your car. I am not sure about price, last I looked I thought it was around $600, but I am not sure.

But overall, great product.

Onstar only saves me about $20 a year on insurance and I could not see LOJACK being any different.

IS there an annual fee for LOJACK??? I know the car sends out a signal to cops equipped with receivers but what if the thief is smart and disconnects the battery and tows your car away???

Floni-

You gotta be *NUTS* to live in NYC and pay the insurance premiums here for theft insurance (which are a LOT) and not have something like Lojack.

The system costs $600 to install, and it's a one time fee. Think of it this way:

You spend $4k a year on insurance. Let's say $2500 of that is just your comprehensive coverage. If you save 15% on that = then you've saved $400 per year.

Inside of 2 years - you made your money back, and saved another $200. Totally worth it.

Can it be defeated? I've heard it can - and because I work in a security related field, can't discuss exactly how - but I can tell you that it has a backup battery, that is concealed within the unit - which itself is hidden on the car, at different locations within each one.

Honestly - it's a judgement call as to how effective it is. But I'm in it for the money call your insurance company, see how much it'll save you - if you make the money back inside of 2 years, go for it. I have a friend with a Vette that pays $7500 a year in insurance. He was skeptical at first, because the dealer wanted $1k to install the system (some BS about it being a vette). Told him to go visit another dealership, who installed it for the standard $600. He saved almost that much in his first year of insurance alone.

Onstar - check it out here. Not exactly what I have (TeleAid is MB's equivalent) but it's pretty cool. Not worth the money, IMHO, because of yearly fees. I'm not down with yearly fees

Good luck,
-J

FLONI you pay HOW MUCH??? JEEEEEEEEEZZZE

I pay about 1k a year for some high coverage with tiny deductables on comp.

I use the onstar for other things plus I can write it off as a business expense in my case.

One of the reasons that Floni pays so much for insurance is that the Maxima is high on NYC's most stolen list. My Caprice was #3 on Chicago's.

I have lo-jack in my highlander. It was around 600 to get it installed.

I'm serious about this part too. The guy showed up at my house at 9:30PM in a plain white van with dark tinted windows. He installed it at my house.
