Mobil 1 0W-30 Discontinued?

I called the Mobil tech line to ask a question about the 0W-30 vs 5W-30, and they told me the 0W-30 is discontinued. I pointed out that the 0W appears on the new SM website, why would they show it, etc. He was adamant.

Anyone else hear anything about this?

PS Yeah, I know, I should join BITOG...

Yes, it has been discontinued. No need to join BITOG, you can read the threads without being a member. There is a long thread about it there.

Basically, go ahead use 5W30 if want to stick with M1. Otherwise, go with another brand i.e. Castrol's Made in Germany 0W30 (i.e Gastrol SLX). It appears that Castrol's German 0W30 is a better 0W than Mobil's anyway. I've been using GC for over a year now and have been happy with it.

Some companies are very good about updating their websites right away while others lag way behind. If the tech says it's being discontinued, then I would tend to believe him.

Normally I would agree, but being that the website was just redesigned to accomodate the new SM oils (among others), and there is new packaging, etc...that seems a pretty stupid time to discontinue a product...just AFTER you recertify it to a new API standard, etc.

Re-certification is most often just a filing of some paper work and no testing is necessary. They probably applied for the re-certification some time ago and included all their oils for the process.

I pressed the right prompt today and got someone who actually knew what he was talking about at Mobil who informed me that M1 0W-30 is still being produced. In case any of you are interested, I was calling because I can't find the 0W-30 locally and wanted to know at what temperature I was really going to notice a difference vs. the 5W-30; the guy was pretty noncommittal about it, but after me throwing numbers at him, 0 degrees F was a temperature he agreed would be about the point that a difference would be noticeable.
