DIY springs/struts this summer

How difficult of a job if I take my time. I have people I can ask to help if I get...stuck.

its not technically difficult

it may be tricky to get the stuts/springs in and out depending on the particular model you are working with

A few of the auto parts stores will rent a spring compressor. That will help you tremendously. The ahrdest part is compressing the springs so they don't shoot out. Other than that, it's pretty easy.

what car? if it's a honda, it will go fast. also, you might not even need a spring compressor if you are using new shocks and springs and tophats.

Beg, borrow or steal some decent spring compressors, they not only make the job a lot easier they also ensure your safety. Springs work under tremendous tension and are more than capable of inflicting very serious damage. Dont let this put you off but as always have the right equipment.

I did it on my e46 M3:

One word of advice, buy new hardware, bolts, nuts, etc. and new strut mounts and shock mounts, everything you need to preassemble the struts & shocks. No messing with disassembly and reassembly, and they are probably worn out anyways, if the shocks were worn, everything else is,even if they were not, they're cheap and really simplify the job. Plus it's safer, no spring compressors etc., just take them to a shop to have them assembled, 10 minute job.

If you do that, can jack up both wheels on each end at the same time, it's no more than a 4 hour job.

art, I was thinking about buying new hardware. This car has to last me another 6 years, and spending the extra money now is a lot better than having to spend more later for something little.

There's lot's of DIY instructions on the net. It's not to hard, but as someone mentioned above springs can be dangerous if the tension is not removed before you try and take them out.
