I did it on my e46 M3:
One word of advice, buy new hardware, bolts, nuts, etc. and new strut mounts and shock mounts, everything you need to preassemble the struts & shocks. No messing with disassembly and reassembly, and they are probably worn out anyways, if the shocks were worn, everything else is,even if they were not, they're cheap and really simplify the job. Plus it's safer, no spring compressors etc., just take them to a shop to have them assembled, 10 minute job.
If you do that, can jack up both wheels on each end at the same time, it's no more than a 4 hour job.
