kit cars!!!!

I was just wondering about kit cars. A kit car seems an ideal solution to alot of peoples dream cars. I found that you could get one for 10 grand. Thats not much considereing the same factory car might cost 80 grand (of course it's really a completely different car just looksthe same). Do kit cars really pay off? How are insurance rates? total cost tally? Final results? What about the actual assembly? Is it easily put together or do you find you self fabrication alot of thing? I realize that this may not be forum but if you know anything about them pleaserespond!!!!

I don't like most kit cars. If you are going to go through the trouble of building a car, why not make it something unique. Why do you need to copy someone elses design?

Also, who are you trying to fool? Maybe the typical joe on the street won't recognize it as a fake, but a true car guy can usually tell.

You can get the kit for $10K, but factor in labor, motor, tranny, wheels, tires, and paint and you are looking at $25K easily. My roommate and I have been looking at them a lot lately.

If you have decent mechanical skills, you can put one together. You can usually get your money out of one, but don't look to get rich. You have to find the right buyer.

I suggest that whatever you choose, you find the owners club and talk to them. If there is no owners club, you should start wondering why. If its such a new kit that few people have built it then its even more important to find the few who have - there are bound to be bugs in the early versions of the cars. Grab a test ride in customers cars - not the factory ones, most who have completed such will be very happy to discuss and demonstrate for you.

Also find out what regulations will apply in your local area - no point in building it and then not being able to register it!

I built a T-Bucket with a Big BLock Chevy - it was a great experience. Something I would never do to vintage tin. The project was really easier than I thought i twas going to be.
