Cheapest insurance company?
I currently have Geico down here in SoCal. I am on the policy with my mom, 18yo sister and i'm 16, with a 1996 Civic EX Coupe. We have full coverage. I pay about $2500 a year, and my sister, with an accident, pays $2600. We have all the good student discounts, etc. I'm sorry, but that seems like a ton of money. Does anyone here have a similar situation, but have a different company and pay less? Geico is a good company, my sister totaled her car and we had a check 2 days later, but it seems way expensive. Thanks for the help.

Yeah that is high but I think the age is a problem you just might have to wait till you are 25 for better insurance rates, When I was between the ages 16-18 I paid nearly $2400 a year that was without the good student discount through State Farm. When I did get my student discout at 19 or so I was down to $2000 a year. I was insuring a 1994 Olds, also I think your state is gong to be another big factor, isn't California high on insurance?
Well not much help for ya but just thought I would tell ya.

You're best bet money-wise is to look up some Independent insurance agencies that represent many different companies. Find a few of them, then call each one and give them your insurance particulars and ask for their best quote. You'll get to compare rates from many different companies and they do all the legwork for you, which they are happy to do trying to get your business.

If you qualify... www.usaa.com (military).
Not always the cheapest, but close and they give rebates most years. Service is #1.

Indeed. If you qualify (must be in the military, or in your case the dependent of someone in the military) I wouldn't even think of using anyone else. Otherwise, just call around and get some quotes. But cheapest isn't always best. You don't need your own insurance company trying to screw you around if you get into an accident.
Also, keep in mind that premiums are very dependant on where you live as well. Right now, I pay $400/every 6 mos for coverage. When I move to Santa Monica, it's going to be around $1200/every 6 mos (which is just slightly less than I bought the car for ).

Just a note regarding the "military discount". Sometimes the rules are rather arbitary...
Did you know that GEICO stands for Government Employee Insurance Company? Seems they wanted to expand, so they bought a lizard!

USAA is much different than GEICO. With USAA you have to have verification. The only expansion USAA has made recently was with the enlisted market. Previously they were military officers only.
Worth looking into however. I just got a $100+ "rebate" (actually more like a dividend check) in December.

have a kid. I got a letter from my insurance saying my rates were going up to about $200 a month. I called my agent to find out why and told her that I was having a child very soon and $200 a month was a huge increase. She said that she would see what she could do. She called me back later and told me that my insurance would actually drop to $73 a month. Turns out if you are under 25 and have a kid the insurance will treat you like you are over 25 when insurance drops. I just need to make sure I don't do anything stupid and have my insurance really go up.
