Rant -- why can't people drive?

It's been snowing for the last coupla days here, and since we only get snow a few days a year here, nobody has snow tires, and 99% of them drive around like idiots, especially SUV's. Normally, I stay off the roads as much as I can at these times to avoid the mayhem, but apparently, that wasn't enough this year.

This happened in front of my house....I was parked!

Though that's a PITA, hope someone's going to pay for it, and at least you weren't hit by one of those 'drivers' on the road while driving at 60KM/h.

Unfortuately not. The way our insurance works here, if I don't catch the guy, I have to pay my collision deductible ($500), but it does not go against my claim record.

i have to agree with the rising amount of idiot drivers. undertaking, speeding and cutting me in all just to gain a car length of space! and dont even start me on SUV's. i live in england and i see these HUGE cars BMW X5, Range Rover and more recently a Dodge ram. do people really need to be driving things like that when the most amount of off-roading that they will do is park the thing on the kerb!

sorry about your car there, even worst to know that it was parked!

Thanks. It wouldn't have been so bad if the person who did it owned up to it. But to run away like a coward.....arggghhhh.

C-MDX....3 bikes and the WRX are already in the garage, so one car has to be on the street. Actually, we drove up to Mt Seymour for the New Year's Eve guided snowshoe tour. Several SUV's in the ditch, but the WRX with all season tires performed like a champ!

It's not surprising though, the way people just mindlessly bomb around this city in their SUVs and AWD cars thinking they're invincible. I got cut off by some guy with a big green N in his window yesterday....

Thanks, Ranney. That Klasse SG sure is holding up well!

I went out and had another look, and noticed that my front tire has sprung a leak (unrelated to this incident - pulled a short nail out last week, heard no leaks, thought it was good - wrong!). Also, it looks like the impact knocked the rear of the car into the curb, as the rim is lightly rashed. There goes the 4 wheel alignment I just got done.

Oh well, at least this way, I may be able to get the rest of the bumper scratches fixed cheap, the alignment redone, and the rim refinished.

Gary I feel your pain. I grew up in N Central Indiana and then lived for 5 years in N. Indiana is a "lake effect snow region". I have all kinds of snow driving experience.

I now live in Southern Indiana where if it snows an inch people freak out. No one has the proper tires, nor do they have any clue how to drive in the stuff. I feel like I take may life into my own hands everytime it snows. The worst offenders are usually those with the SUV's who feel "this justifies why they have 4 wheel drive" however, they are usually equiped with "all season" tires at best. It amazes me how people drive. The thing is going too slow is just as dangerous. A typical southern Indiana driver well drive along and reach a bridge or overpass, their brain will say...these freeze quickly....then their reaction is ....slow down.....apply brakes....result slipping, sliding and losing control as everyone else starts the tail light dance. Note those drivers....don't brake...release the accelerator and coast, you will not lose control.

I have a confession....I get perverse joy out of seeing an SUV fly by me on the highway to only see them in the ditch a few miles down the road, all the while I cruise along in my rear wheel drive car with dedicated winter tires and never get stuck nor have any true sliding problems.
