I got a free one for my 14 year old car after my local news station alerted me to a limited time offer. Glad I didn't actually pay for it because it is totally not worth it. The report did not detail any specific information about my car I did not already know other than an emissions inspection date from 12 years ago Information such as date of previous owner's registration, the rest of the inspection dates, etc were not in the report.

I don't know what other carfax reports look like but judging by mine it doesn't seem it will be helpful to anyone buying a used car other than confirming obvious damage they would easily detect by looking the car over. Just my humble opinion.

~One man’s opinion~

I used ‘Carfax’ to get info on the Volvo as the ad said, “2000 15,000 miles. The report agreed with the mileage but didn’t cite any out of the ordinary. Upon closer inspection I found there were no plastic fasteners on the grille panel, looking around there were some scratches on the front bumper vinyl. Closer look the front-end panels were mostly replaced.

As the old adage says, “Let the buyer beware”, but finding the above gave me leverage on dealer’s price.

Long story short (what cha mean too late) Carfax is useful but not a 100% guarantee that everything that happens to a car is necessarily reported to it.

But that's a nice gesture by 'thevolvoguy'

~Hope this is of some help~

Re: Free Carfax report

Carfax is good for keeping you away from very bad used cars. If you are shopping around, its not a bad idea to get the 30 day thing and put in as many VINs as you can before you even call a dealership. It by NO MEANS is a good way to tell if used car is clean or not. Hell, to be honest, the only real way is to compare two cars, one known clean and the prospective. There are paintwork signs on 99% of cars, but there are some pretty amazing repair jobs done on newer cars that a VERY hard to spot, only tell-tale signs give it away.
