i dont know what state you are in, but if in you are in nj it wont matter that much if you change companies. in nj, anytime the insurance company has to come out of pocket you are charged insurance points. that is why if the cost is slighty higher then the deductible, you are better paying it off. with my insurance company, any payout and i am charged 5 insurance points. so if someone steals my car and they can't recover it or the damage is more than $500 and i tell them to pay it, i get 5 insurance points. remember just because you got into accident doesn't mean you have to file a claim. your insurance goes up because of the claim, not the accident. Now if you get points for the accident being your fault, that is different. if i get into an accident and damage my car, and tell the insurance company about the accident but pay to have my car fixed or dont get my car fixed, no harm to my insurance rates. The reason i've been told that i get 5 insurance points if someone steals my car is rather obvious, if i get a brand new car later in 2 years i decide i can't make the payments, or want something newer, or am racing it and the car is f***** up, i arrrange to have it stolen. i can keep doing this if it werent for the 5 insurance points.
btw, i would be very surprised the guy at the body shop is telling the truth. if the police were involved, then a police report would of been filled out. even if the carfax comes up clean, if a buyer asked me if my car was in accident..i would be up front. imagine if they find out and took you to court, and more importantly i strongly believe in"what comes arounds goes around"
