Water in engine?

Im driving a 97 zj (jeep grand cherookee laredo) 6cyl. I go through a large puddle about 15 yards long and my front end gets to the other side but the back end gets stuck up to the middle of the rear wheels. Enging wont start, had it towed to jeep dealership. What do you think will be the outcome. The engine was never submurged in water.

Could be just that the tailpipe got submerged too deeply and the engine stalled out. Just taking a guess. If your engine ingested water, it could be ruined as water's incompressible. But I'd think that'd make some pretty bad sounds and be pretty apparent.

what would be better or cheaper: to try and fix the current engine, since there is water in it OR purchase a used enigine? I've heard of other problems after instalinga different engine like the transmision going and stuff like that, is that something i should be worring about?
