Transmission Fluid FLUSH after 80k miles?

I have a 98 Nissan Maxima that I bought at 75k miles, so I have no record of when and if the transmission fluid was last changed.

The dealer suggested I get it done.

Midas suggested I leave it alone, as it's high milage, and some broken bits of metal keep things in motion there.

Any suggestions?

You will hear conflicting stories on this issue, some say flush while others say leave it.

Personally, I would change it and install a new tranny filter. You don't need to do a full flush, you can just change the fluid in the pan if your uncofortable doing a complete flush.

If it were mine, I think I would take it to a good transmission shop and see what they say. If you're into doing it yourself, there is a good tranny flush write-up on the Amsoil website.

I remember reading something about this same subject about 2 yrs back in road and track. They said leave it.

I did a flush on my 93 maxima with 100K miles and it's still going strong. It did shift smoother, but I figure cars have gone 300K or more miles with just traditional services so I guess there is really no need to do a flush. I probably won't have a flush done again in the future.

I don't see how it could possibly be good to have broken pieces of metal going between your gears.

If I have the dealer do it, would they be responsible for anything going wrong, and pay for the subsequent fixes?

They would if you could prove that their negligence casued the problem, but good luck. They will most likely say the tranny had issues becasue you didn't do the flush often enough or something.

I think the dealer would say too bad.

Changing the filter and fluid is a good ideal but be careful what type of fluid you use for replacement. A synthetic has a tendency to clean and therefore if used as the new fluid would become dirty and remove build up around seals and possibly causing a leak. Use the standard type of fluid called for.
