Where to find a used car?

I'm thinking about getting rid of my SI. Right now on the loan i have left about what it's worth. My insurance is just over $4,000 a year now on that. I have lojack and everything, and took drivers ed, but it's such a higly stolen car, plus it's a 2 door and clasified as a 'sports car.' I'm thinking i can get $14,000 for it or so maybe, which will pay off the loan. The car was around $18,500 i think when i bought it. I want to find something a little cheaper, but with lower insurance costs. I'm thinking that the two might kind of go hand in hand.

I'm pretty picky about my vehicles, so what's the best way to find the one i want? ie if i want a 96-97 bmw 3 series 4 door manual or a 98 subaru impreza 2.5 rs manual. Most cars i'm interested in big dealers only have 1-2 of. They are often too high of miles, a different year, or something else. Are there any good online sites? Or can you call up a dealership and have them do a search?

I'm in the market for a new car as well, and I've been mostly using the Autotrader: www.autotrader.com

You can narrow your search down by just about anything imaginable (i.e. color, trans type, engine type, etc.) and they seem to have the most and best listings of any site I had found.

For leads on a Subie, you might check http://www.nasioc.com, http://www.rs25.com, or http://www.clubwrx.com. IMO, stay away from dealerships and look to private sales if at all possible; you'll get more car for your $$$.

Good luck on your search,
Tort
