The WRX is the best bang for your buck out there-

A real Turbo (I'm sorry but the Audi/VW Turbo is a snooze fest), AWD and decent reliability.

If you're not getting at least a Mustang GT, then don't waste your money, go with the RSX. I never understood the appeal of a V6 Mustang - they aren't fast, they don't sound good and there are lots of other nicer options when it comes to sports coupes which aren't 8 cylinders.

The RSX-S is a great car if you like the Japanese pocket rocket segment. I had a 93 Prelude VTEC and was really impressed with the RSX-S I test drove. The gearbox is super slick, nice interior, good ride/handling trade off and Honda reliability. The engine lacked the top end punch of my Prelude, it made a lot of noise but didn't feel like it was making a lot of power up top. The Acura TSX drives similar and has four doors, a nicer interior, but still looks good. I had a new V6 Mustang for a week as a rental and it felt like it belonged in a rental fleet (nothing good to say about the car except the looks.) The first generation WRX for the US is another car I drove and came away super unimpressed with.

RSX. I'm not huge on the styling, but it's built much better than any Mustang.

Rsx hands down. My ex had a base 03 rsx which I turbo'd and I loved that car. Great mpg and the car put down 315whp all for around 5g(in xtra's). If you were leaving the car stock then def try to find a type-s. Mpg is close to the same under daily driving conditions but it has 45hp more. Now if you are worried about insurance then the 45hp won't meen that much comp to what you will pay in extra ins over a base.

Meh, the transmissions are ok unless you are wanting to do big smokey awd burnouts daily. If you can drive decently and arent looking for a car to beat on the wrx should be fine.

The wrx tranny does catch a lot of bad press for being glass but i dont really think they are as bad as people make it out to be. A lot of the cars that have shelled out the transmission in the wrx are pushing much more than stock hp (300 wheel horsepower seems to be the magic number for bombing out the wrx tranny lol).

I have a rsx-s and a wrx and the wrx is the superior car imo. If you want a sports car go wrx, if you want a cool car that does everything pretty well but you are more into interior looks and finish i would say rsx-s.

some other cars that you may consider-

-civic si (i loved my 02 si, one of the most unique and fun cars i have owned)

-svt focus

-mazda miata (yes, men do drive them and they are great for what they were made for)

-honda s2000 (may be hard to find one for 13k but they are out there and are awesome cars)

-srt-4 neon (dont have any experience with them except a test drive in a modded one.... WOW!!)

I would get the RSX Type S, no question about it.

I've owned a base 5spd for 4 years now, and really like the car. It's fun to drive, has a pretty big trunk, and all the amenities you'd want. The tranny is a dream to work, especially compared to my friend's WRX which feels like a leg press. Although the Type S requires premium and insurance might be a little higher, I'd still try getting one. Having the extra 40hp and real VTEC is definintely nice. I've really had no problems with my tranny, but it's not a Type S. I'd like to think most people make the tranny problems bigger then they're really are.

I'll admit the base isn't super fast, but I was able to spank my cousin's 08 Mercedes-Benz C300 sport (6 speed), twice.

RSX-S does take premium fuel. But I would take the RSX-S over the Mustang if both were choices. I wanted to get me an rsx-s but for the price I went with the 350z.

My buddy's 04 WRX tranny blew out and he was bone stock. Took 16 months to get Subaru to replace it. Way too much hassle.
