Re: Which would you Choose

I would go with the Evolution. The new STI's handling just isn't there for me... It is fast as heck, but it understeers incredibly. The evo has one of the better steering setups I've driven, with a nice crisp turn in and great rotation under power out of the corner.

Re: Which would you Choose

Find a nice used BMW M3 E46 -333hp AND a sturdy/well built feel.

Right now, you can find a low mileage M3 for around the same price as your Sti and evo
(And it will hold it's value very well too)

It's a different feel...and to be honest, isn't as fun to drive as the EVO. I looked to getting an E46 to stop the hemorrhaging from the E30, but it just wasn't the same. The EVO is a different kind of drive, but extremely fun and engaging.

Second car did make me go wow, great looks, I had seen lots of pictures, but in person it was very impressive. Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution, 291 HP from a 2.0 liter 4 cylinder. Seemed very well built and has the reputation as just insane if you push it. I know Mitsubishi has had quality issues in the past, not sure about currently, but only 1 dealer in Nova Scotia, that may be a problem in this economy if it went under, although I do see quite a few Mitsubishi around so they must be selling, although I have never seen an Evo on the street
Give me your opinion of these two cars, the price was within $3000 of each other.
My opinion? Their both little boy toys I don't care how much power they put out. Get an M3 if you want something in the boy racer genre. More sophisticated, incredible handling, and it'll look ok if your over 25 and driving it (unlike the two cars your looking at).

Heh heh, while I don't give such stuff much thought, my wife and I *were* conscious of some odd attention back when we had the WRX. Maybe it was "hey, what're those old folks doing in a REX?!?"

I feel *kinda* the same way in the M3 though...like "hey, you're pretty old to be posing as some yuppie" That car's a radar-magnet but the LEOs lose interest when they see how old I am.."eh, it's not some smart-@$$ kid after all.."

Nah, I'd rather have my S8. Only M5s I really like are the very first ones from, uhm..'88 IIRC.

If I were ever gonna have another BMW I'd go for an older 740i but I really do like the Audis better. Having a wonderful Audi dealer, in an area where the BMW techs are just *AWFUL* has a bit to do with it too.

Re: Which would you Choose

I want the M5 Touring wagon. The Jaguar XF-R Estate sounds pretty freaking hot too. Sexy Sport Wagons = awesome.

You said the price was close, did they show you the EVO GSR or MR? The MR is significantly more expensive than the GSR. I had thought the STI was a bit cheaper than either though.

FWIW, Top Gear picked the Evo X over the new STI :P
but the STI was faster around the track

Both cars will make you happy. The STI comes with a horrible stock tune (I have an 08) and a reflash really wakes it up. Bosts comes on sooner and it's at about 340 to the crank. A set of sways really sorts it out too, dials a lot of that terminal understeer out. Even stock its a potent little car that feels deceivingly civil when you're not pushing it.

The EVO is no doubt the better track car, but it doesnt have fold down seats and a really small trunk. Because of those two things it was never an option for me.

Anybody that can't respect either car is in denial.
