I can argue it both ways; half of my current vehicles were bought new, the other half used. But IMO new is more likely to provide complete peace of mind and it's nice to *not* have to do a major detail on something before putting it into service.
Well here's my viewpoint on the used vs new scenario...

I like value. I don't mind spending money when I have to in order to get something of real value to me, rather than waste a small amount of money on junk.

When I look at a new car, I don't see value. I see a bad investment. The minute you drive it off the lot, it's lost thousands of dollars in value. That doesn't appeal to me. When I compare the cars I can afford new and the cars I can afford used, that further sours my mind towards new cars.

Ask me whether I'd have a used e46 330ci, or a brand spanking new Chevrolet Cobalt SS? Go on!

Holden_C04- And that, as they say, is what makes it a horse race; different people approach this stuff differently

Heh heh, *I* approach it from both sides almost evenly. But I will say that it's *VERY* hard for me to find used vehicles that're nice enough for me to live with. I look at a *lot* of "perfect" (scare-quotes intentional) cars before I find one that's good enough, and sometimes I just *never* do. Not that many showroom-quality used cars out there IME.

And anyhow...this is all about which way TH0001 wants to jump. If *he* would rather buy a new Cobalt SS than a used e46 M3 I'm the last guy who's gonna about it.

Re: Cobalt SS vs. WRX?? Which one to buy

I prefer the Cobalt SS over the Impreza WRX and the Lancer Evolution.

1.) I really like the styling of the Cobalt, it's understated and sporty at the same time. The styling of the other two cars is much too "boy racer" for my tastes. I think both of the cars look pretty terrible. The Impreza receives almost constant styling updates as well and the reason is simply: the car is ugly; Subaru keeps trying to "fix" it but honestly it never gets any better. The styling of the Lancer makes the car look like it came out of a time warp leading from 1985. It works in Japan but honestly I don't see the appeal of it at all.

2.) In a word, performance. For the money the Cobalt is the winner. What does that mean for a daily driver? Well, probably not so much but the facts are that for the $$$ the Cobalt is the better performing car in it's class. One reason I attribute for this is weight. I'm not sure why the Lancer and the Impreza weigh so much but they seem very heavy for compact cars. The Lancer is 3,517 lbs according to Edmunds and the Impreza is almost as much. That's getting close to my LS8's weight (3,772 lbs) which is a mid-sized, V8 powered sedan.

3.) Not only is the Cobalt less $$$ up front it will be cheaper to run as well. It carries an EPA highway rating of 30 MPG. The Lancer is only rated at 22 mpg and the Impreza is rated at 25 mpg.

I could keep going but honestly the facts are out there for people to discover. I much prefer the Cobalt and I think if a person puts aside any prejudices they may have over brand name or where the car is built they will discover the Cobalt is an excellent car and better than it's counterparts.

Florida-LS,

You have made some good points, but there are a few that i am going to disagree with. Both the Evolution and Impreza has it own history, these are rally car that we are talking about. With good knowledge these cars can be track monsters.

I understand your point about the Cobalt, yes it is indeed a good car but i believe it comes down to your personal needs.

For example, does the driver of the car want a 2 door? a 4 door? turbocharge? supercharger? and so on.

hmmm I would say that this is like asking someone whether they would prefer the original nintendo verses the nintendo wii... WRX is an animal! AWD and an unreal powerhouse.... Additionally, the car looks and feels amazing.
