Re: Cobalt SS vs. WRX?? Which one to buy

Nothing wrong with a Cobalt

Its:

Cheap to maintain
Cheap to insure
Good warranty
Easy to clean
Good A to B car

I downgraded from a 2007 VW GTI to an 08 Cobalt and I don't regret it one bit.

As long as this thread has gone on todd has made his choice by now. Cool thread though.
The Subaru is a cheap car as well IMO. Nothing 'great' about it and it certaintly doesn't feel like I am getting an extra 4k worth of quality, infact build quality seems about average on both. I don't expect a great amount of build quality since they are both cheap cars and I haven't been disappointed.

What I meant when I said cheap, I should have said slow and boring. Around town the Cobalt feels faster because it is torquier for example.

I drove the Mazda 3 Speed and suprisingly liked it quite a bit.

I heard of a guy who hated his '08 Mazdaspeed. May have just been a finicky guy. Hey, what would you think of joining the Bimmer community? E46 BMW M3 for $24,500?

2003 1/2 M3 For sale $24,500 - E46Fanatics

Or how about a BMW 330i ZHP for $16,000?

330i ZHP black on black $16k/OBO, 74k miles - E46Fanatics

Or if you like new stuff, how about a 2006 330i for $28,000 ($45,000 new)?

What about buying a 1-2 year old car? Depreciation is so big with any car you could probably save quite a bit of money, or get something a little nicer than a Cobalt or WRX for the same money.

Now you're talking, much more appealing than a Cobalt or Scooby, IMO. Keep in mind, more expensive to insure, fewer people work on BMWs (unless you do your own, then it doesn't matter), no warranty or new car smell. Still in my mind used is a better alternative, given that the highest cost of ownership of a new car is depreciation. BMWs are better looking and RWD.

Just my personal opinion, but if I was torn between two similarly performing vehicles, and one was American made, and the other not, it would't be a hard choice for me.

I don't draw the line at supporting the troops, I try and support our economy as much as possible too. Get the Cobalt (Of course, the Mazda is a viable option too, given Ford's ownership interest in Mazda)

The new car smell is toxic (seriously). So buy a BMW.

Re: Cobalt SS vs. WRX?? Which one to buy

IIRC, a ways back on this thread TH0001 said he'd rather not buy used this time ("used pocket-rocket" = ).

I can argue it both ways; half of my current vehicles were bought new, the other half used. But IMO new is more likely to provide complete peace of mind and it's nice to *not* have to do a major detail on something before putting it into service.

I dont think I could find it appealing to buy a car from a company that flies into DC in personal jets looking for a bailout plan on capitol hill. Your warrantee and depreciation may be in serious trouble. Think for a minute, would you invest in a falling stock market ?

Not a Cobalt, or Scoobie fan. just thinking outside the box.

Interesting thoughts, although even if they "go under" they will just go into bankruptcy and remain in business, warranties in tact.

BTW, sweet Mustang in your sig

It's only surprising if you are basing your judgments on stats in magazines. HP and Torque ratings, and 0-60 times are a *very* small piece of the fun to drive factor. If printed numbers where all that mattered the "pocket rocket" segment wouldn't even exist. Give a smaller car a good steering rack, make it so it handles well without being harsh, and gear it correctly and you don't need a ton of power to have fun. That's the basic formula in my mind and the MS3 does it the best. Ever wonder why the MK1 GTi is still the peoples choice even though it is the slowest ever made?
The reason I suggested you might like the MS3 earlier in this thread is if you look at what they did to turn a regular 3 into a MS3 versus the other two cars you see a much clearer picture of why it might be more fun to drive than the other two. Also, IMO (and opinion is all it is right?) I think the interior perceived quality is nicer in the 3. And this is coming from somebody that just talked his lady into a Subaru. So I'm not biased. I just think the MS3 matches what you are looking for better.

If I were looking to get into a new FWD 4cyl, I wouldn't think twice about picking up the SS. It's the best new car you can get for low $20K.
