Depending on the paint, metallic silver can look damn good (some say dashing) if the dark trim contrasts nicely and holds its looks longer than black. Silver is a classy color but this debate always depends on the model car. Some cars look great with certain colors and awful with others.
The A6 silver shimmers in the sun and looks awesome under early light and dusk. There is a reason why nearly all car ads (audi, lexus, infinity, mercedes etc) seem to showcase silver over any other color.
That said, I've seen Audis with the darker oyster metallic and it looks great too. It's a nice compromise between black and silver.
Heck, I'm already OCD with silver and afraid I'd turn downright suicidal with black...
Personally, I'd rather enjoy a clean appearance than fret over every imperfection with black.

I perfected a lot of skills on that paint and decided to go with the detailer's final exam and got Black Sapphire for my new one. I absolutely love it and don't have many problems maintaining it. I personally love the look of a perfectly maintained black car and while it takes a little more maintenance I have been very happy with the color. I get lots of compliments on it and it also serves as my rolling "billboard" for my services.
In my opinion there are just too many silver BMW's on the road! (No offense intended - I'd take a silver M3 over anything black if I had the chance).

For me it's been a no-win situation. When I had a silver car I wanted a black one. IMO no other color looks better than a freshly detailed black. Now that I have a black car, at times I miss the easier to care for silver. The black looks great after a wash/wax/detail, but it's short-lived. But I know if I went back to silver I'd miss those moments admiring the deep wet black after a detail.

But if its a daily driver--the constant upkeep would necessitate a padded cell (which might not be bad if I had a car to detail in there).

I still say you go with the black. Anything you have to work hard for is usually worth having. But good luck either way...
