Has Anyone Dyed A Convertible Top?

Searched, and came up empty. I have a light oak twill (cloth) convertible top that I want to dye black. The light oak top is very difficult to keep clean. I've tried Raggtopp as well as other products and I still get dark "rub" spots in the fabric. Although the top is small (2000 Corvette) I've been quoted $1500 for a new top (9 hrs. labor) Hence I'm considering dying it black. Any thoughts or advice appreciated before I jump in.

Re: Has Anyone Dyed A Convertible Top?

'01 Miata owner in the same boat...

I have a tan top that was neglected when I purchased it... Vinyl cleaner made a big difference but not well enough for my tastes... I actually prefer the tan top to black but the black vinyl tops hide dirt so much better...

I'd price a used (or new) black top (I'd imagine they are available for your Vette) and consider selling your old one before dying yours as the dye might not last as long as you hope...

At least for Miata's, removing the vinyl from the brackets ins't an easy task.

Re: Has Anyone Dyed A Convertible Top?

Appreciate the input! I spoke with a veteran upholsterer and he said dying the top would look like crap after one or two washings! He suggested other options for cleaning it (other than Raggtopp) He said if I was dead set on a black top there'd be no substitute for one that was manufactured in black
I guess I'll keep it tan until the back window delaminates (which is also a frequent occurance)
