Question Testing, Testing, 1-2-3 ~ What's In This Stuff?

I had a little QDing to do today on my Klassed SG x5 truck. So I decided to try a simple test. I did one half of the hood with FI and the other with Mother's Showtime QD. The method was identical for each product. I've panned the Mother's in the past in favor of the FI and I like the smell of the FI better so I was surprised when the results of my little test revealed the Mother's side was slicker. When wiping a clean towel across each finished surface the Mother's side created noticably less friction.

Ok well I learned something but it also raised another question. What's in the Mother's? Is it wax that is making the difference? If so I don't want that on my paint when it is time to layer more SG.

How can I identify the ingredients in a car finish product? I guess that I could request the MSDS sheets from companies to try to find out more about the products ingredients. However I have seen many MSDS sheets that actually tell very little about nontoxic ingredients.

Meanwhile I going back to review the QD threads so that I can broaden my horizons for quick detailing products with an emphasis on QDs without wax.

I used to love Show Time till knowledgable people
told me it contains SILICONE's ON SILICONE.

And these people told me that these Silicones will
slowly deeestroy your paint job. So I listen to them and
switched to One Grand Show Off which contains CARNAUBA
ON CARNAUBA.

I don't know if what i'm telling you is accurate, so let's
see what some of the professionls say, i'm just a hobbyist.

Zaino!

Silicones are really only bad when you STOP using them-then, you'll see the difference!
For a polymer sealed car like Klasse or Zaino, you want a polymer-based QD like Z6.
It is by far the best QD I've used, as far as slickness and ease of application.

HTH!

Well...

The difference is most definately due to the amount and type of oil in both products. Despite the possibility that Mother's has silicone oil in it, my dad is hooked on using it on his KLASSE'd car and there is no grabbing it out of his hands.

A MSDS sheet shows little of the actual ingredients of a product. It only has to show potentially harmful ingredients and company's are NOT required by law to supply them to retail customers.

For about 3000-4000 bucks per sample, the chemist's where I work can analyze any product.....let me know if you want anything analyzed!

Also, PLEASE be careful when referring to silicones. All silicones are not bad, but silicone oils found in some tire dressing do deteriorate rubber over time. It is not true that they are bad ONLY after you stop using them. They are doing harm the whole while, but you do not see the damage till you stop using them, in general. On paint, silicone oil can interfere with a repaint and is very difficult for a body shop to remove as it finds it's way into pits and chips in the paint. Finally, there are many quality products out there that contain silicone compounds or polymers that work well. Please be careful when explaining this as not to mislead and misinform........
