paint hardness????

how do you tell how hard the paint is and what products to attack it with.....I usually just go at it with Meguiars #80, and if that doesnt work at all, then I jump up to #83 then go back over with 80....

but is there a way to find out what I should start with so that I dont waste my time.....

I have meguiars 80 and 83 and also menzerna heavy polish and light polish.....

It depends what kind of car and year it is !

Newer Japanese cars will have hard paint and German car softer paint on older model with new paint just as hard.

wow... you canucks need to learn grammar just playing :P

im assuming from your screenname that you have a toyota. I drive around a scion tC which is a toyota at heart. The paint is of average paint hardness (maybe even somewhat softer than what I would consider normal). you should start out with FPII ona polishing pad and see if that removes your defects. If not, step up to IP on a polishing pad. From there on, increase the pad aggressiveness until the defects are removed.

IMO the "try #80 and go from there" is a pretty safe approach. Well, on some paints that are known to be soft (e.g., ss lacquer and the stuff on the new Pontiac Solstices) you could start with something milder.

Oh, and be careful about lumping all German paint in the same category; my Audis laugh at #80, too mild for anything but *very* light marring.

Since new car vehicle manufacturers paint processes are so similar now and given the limited number of paint manufacturers, you may be surprised to find out that there really is no such thing as 'hard and soft paint'. Years ago, that might have been the case, but now-a-days for the majority of vehicles out there it's not a major concern.
