New unofficial info: abrasiveness rankings of meguiar's products

After the discussion on this board a few weeks ago (http://www.autopia-carport.com/forum...&threadid=6147) I emailed my meguiar's rep friend and asked him. Here is his response:

Understand that any cleaner/polish will have some filling properties due to
polish. The *** products might have some filling characteristics. All
other products are pure cleaners and should do very little if any filling.
Any Meguiar's product with a cleaner may contain diminishing abrasives.
Understand that there are chemical cleaners as well as Diminishing
abrasives. Products can rely solely on one or combine the two to undertake
the task of cleaning.

I was frankly surprised that the #9 was the finest stuff, and dissapointed that he didn't include the Body Shop products - but hey - this is better info than we've ever had before.

Actually, I believe he DID include a few from the Body Shop Professional line.

Diamond Cut Compound
Compound Power
Dual Action Cleaner Polish
Swirl-Free Polish

These are all part of the BSP line. I guess he didn't include a few like Hand Polish and Speed Glaze.

One nice thing about some of the BodyShop Prod's is that they have that little abbrasiveness chart on the back - I know that Swirl Free Polish is very light, and Dual Action Cleaner is one step more agressive than SFP.

I've got most of the BSP's, I should put together a little matrix.

Yeah, the Medallion shocks me - although I believe it's a case of "solvency" abbrasiveness. During thewaxtest Round 1, the Medallion really took a lot of crud off the panel.

To finish the list, based on my experience would be:

Show Car Glaze #7
Machine Glaze #3
Hand Polish #81

Hand Polish is the best finishing glaze I've used-incredible wet look even without wax and it is easier to remove the excess than either #3, #7 or 3Ms IHG.

In addition, Dual Action Cleaner/Polish may start off more aggressive than Fine Cut #2, but after the abrasives break down, it is about as gentle as Swirl Free or Swirl Remover.

Great info, carguy! I just can't believe #9 2.0 is the least aggressive on that list. It must be mostly fillers. ScratchX is a bit of a surprise too.

Scottwax - good additions - I agree with your assessment. I need to try the DACP again - I wasn't too happy with it 1st time I tried, but at that time I didn't understand diminishing abrasives and the technique required to use them properly - so i'm sure I didn't buff long enough.

Question for you Scott - how do you apply the hand poish? Is it a basic "just get it on there then buff it out" or do you work it? By hand or orbital?

Geekysteve - I'm pretty sure the Medallion IS that abrasive. It does have chemical cleaners too but I don't think he was using that fact in his rankings. when I was first getting back into detailing I tried Medallion - and I was impressed because it got fast results. I think it is still OK for lighter colors. But I got discouraged with it on the Porsche - too abrasive for my needs.

Carguy-I apply the Hand Polish...by hand! I use a foam hand applicator and work a small amount into the paint until it looks nearly clear and dry (just like the rest of the BSP stuff). You just want to use enough to cover the area-it has a lot of oils and if you use too much, it can be tough to remove. I put a light layer on the entire car and then wait about 10 minutes before removing the excess.

After that, I have lately been putting on a coat of High Tech Yellow #26 (liquid) followed by a light coat of Pinnacle Paste Glaz.
