What wattage for halogens?

I'm in the market for some halogen lights. I see alot of people here use those twin halogens that are on stands, the yellow and black ones you can buy at Home Depot or Lowe's. Most of them I see are 250watts a piece and I see some that are 500watts a piece. Which ones would be more suitable for lighting up those defects?? Thanks,,,,,,AR

Sears has (as of last week) a nice stand with two 500W lights on sale for $19.99. It works great as a heater, too!

I'd imagine you would need a pretty serious extension cord to power those things without frying anything,,,,,,,,,AR

I found a 500Watt with 4 hallogen bulbs, so you can adjust lighting for $20 at a tool show. We get tool companies that rent out "halls" or parking lots. I get alot of stuff from there for my shop. There air compressor tools are so cheap and good quality.

Yeah, those cheap tool shows are good for some random things. Bought some really cheap tools just to throw in the trunk for emergency repairs at the Homier show we had here a couple months ago, usually have some halogens for sale too, but if i remember correctly theyre only 250s.

I received the dual light system from Sears for Christmas. Each light will do either 250 or 500 watts. Press switch once for 250, twice for 500, three times for off. So, the assembly is from 250 to 1000 watts. The stand from Sears appears much nicer than the yellow one I gave to a buddy of mine a couple of years ago. Seems to be a bit heavier built. The unit does a decent job of heating the garage. A work of caution, however, 1000 watts of halogen light on the side of a black Silverado extended cab will make you understand exactly how much more work is left to do.

I have a single 500 watt work light from Ace Hardware. They are onsale this week with a ground mount for only $10. I figured I couldn't go wrong and it's nice and portable

I have a mini clamp-on/hanging 250W unit, but am picking up a dual 500W stand mounter that allows each light to swivel soon.
(good 'ol PT employee discount at the lumber yard will come in handy

Sears has a dual halogen adjustable 250/500 with stand on sale for $20. Its a great buy, I have two of them.
