If you really want to get into the nitty gritty of it, a paid worker has to watch the clock, a hobbiest doesn't. That can make a vast difference in quality and detail, and it doesn't favor the "pro" who's trying to make a profit.

What it sometimes comes down to is, Production, or product out fast for profit compared to the love of the final result... on top of which , it is the hobbyists own vehicle being worked on... being judged by the general public in subtle ways. A professional detailer usually cannot have the same emotional investment in the final result, so, love is the factor that makes us strive for that perfect effect, depth, shine, whatever it is that excites us. (it is so subjective ,what a perfect detail comprises) Me, I love the fact that I did it ! And thats why I am interested in whats out there for products and what you other guys are concerned with, love stress over, obsess about... some Pro's just want the money. Some are probably obsessed..... Me, I dont think I would be able to stand love/polishing a car and someone else driving it away But thats just me...

Regarding the subject of "misinformation" on the internet: of course there is a monumental amount of wrong advice given on internet boards, but sooner or later if you do enough research you will find someone on a board that will know what they are talking about and give you correct advice. Internet reasearch in itself is a skill: if you don't have the skill to correctly research a subject, then you will never learn it correctly, whether that subject be detailing or basic car knowledge. I speak from experience in other areas, not detailing, but the point is the same.

I've learned so much from this board just browsing for a few days: if I had known a few weeks ago what I know now from these forums I would never have taken my car to a detail shop (they scratched the paint off the center cap of one of my rims and left a lot of swirls.)
