84 Honda Accord.. paintswirls or just old pain?

Hi Guys,

I am new to detailing and this forum so please forgive me for the redundant questions.

I have used the following products to remove scratches/swirl marks from my paint.

3M Swirl Mark Remover
3M Finish Restorer
kit Scratch Out
TurtleWax Rubbing Compound

And none of them seem to work. I can’t see even a difference after applying the products. I am doing it all by hand. Here are some pics of what the paint looks like:

Now, can these scratches be the paint cracking underneath the gloss or can this be fixed?

Thanks in advance!

My guess would be the failure of the paint due to uv/oxidation exposure. Probably not what you wanted to hear.

I used to have an '84 Accord. Great car, it served me well.

looks like the clear coat is gone.

Is the paint metallic?

the paint looks great when I wash, polish and wax. It shines... very wet look! However, when you start looking at it in different angles and such you start seeing all the scratches.

The real wet look makes me think of the paint being damaged, however, the gloss still looks good.

but then again... what the heck do I know????

Would 1Z Ultra Paint Polish work here or would it be a waste of money?

its hard to say without seeing it in person, but i would agree that the clearcoat looks like it is failing

Graphfixz,

I can't tell from the pics either, but there will be a free "Detailing Clinic" put on by the local Meguiars distributor on Dec. 11 in Gilbert, AZ.

Mike Pennington from Meg's will be there, and he's great about assessing your paint's condition and making recommendations!!
I think if you can make it, you would get some good answers.

I'm going to be there, and I'm hoping that my '85 Civic Wagon will be, too!!

You might try some Autoglym SRP applied regularly over a period of a month or so. It may be that the paint has 'dried out' due to long term sun exposure. The SRP should seep into the paint and revitalise it like moisturiser for skin.
Cheaper than a respray if it works!

Does Maguiar's have a product that compares to Autoglym SRP? The reason I ask is because I live in a VERY SMALL town and it seems like I can get Maguiar's far easier.

Thanks!

not sure about Meguars (don't use their stuff) but Klasse AIO is comparable and much more 'available' in the US I believe.

Try using a glaze like Meguiar's Show Car Glaze (#7) or Hand Polish (#80 or #82?). Those are oily products which may help with the old paint.
