Do you remember the first vehicle you detailed?

The first car I detailed (early ā€˜50s) was a 1929 Bentley that belonged to a friend of my Father, Brigadier John Dix of Kensington, in London (I guess you always remember your first time).

It has always been a relaxing past time for me and while at college I had a part-time business detailing classic vintage cars, and after all this time I’m still being paid for what I love to do.

In college, it was a business professor's Outback wagon in the mint green color. The inside was *trashed* with spilled Coke on every surface, and the outside was remarkably swirl-free (never washed). The punchline? He lived at the end of a 2 mile long dusty road. I drove roughly 2 mph the whole way so he could at least appreciate it for the evening.

Side note: He gave me some AA Low Gloss to use on the interior surfaces. Whatever happened to that stuff?

93 3000GT red. Totally oxidized out but was kept in great condition. Owner was really happy and said it never looked that good until I detailed it.

That's where I live. I go crazy because pretty much every other day I wash or spray and wipe it.

before Autopia, the most detailing i would do was with my 1989 Mustang, single stage dark red paint with swirls and minor oxidization. used the Meguiar's Deep Crystal System. it looked nice but it took a long time to get the oxidization out since i was doing it by hand. and then i got one of those Waxmaster's orbital buffers and thought i was so hardcore! then i found Autopia and found out i had A LOT more to learn.

interestingly enough, i could tell when i needed to wax it because i could see the swirls on the door whenever the wax was gone!

I used to help my Dad wash our 1972 Ford Country Squire Station Wagon (white with fake wood trim) and that is when I discovered the joys of STP and Armor All. We had some really shiny red vinyl in that car! I think I was 13 or 14 when I started helping. My kids have been helping me since they were 8 and 10.
