Polishing aluminum

I have an aluminum turbo shield that could use polishing. Now since its under the hood, it gets dirty or dusty. Before polishing it, should I spray a QD on it to get the dirt out then polish? When polishing aluminum, should i use a light or firm pressure?

I would wash it (if you can do so safely) before I would put a protectant on it.

If the shield has no coating of any kind, I would use Nevr-Dull which is one of the best products for polishing metal that I have found

I would use fairly firm pressure unless there is a chance of distorting the shield.

I have had the best success with Mothers mag and alluminum polish. The packaging sais that no firm pressure is needed but i find that it works better with some elbo greese. Heres a little trick. When you polish you will begin to notice black resudue comming off onto your towel. That usually is nickile. It works great as a metal polish so after you've rubbed the metal down with your brand of polish, wipe it clean and rub it down with the black towel, and then buff dry. Works great
