Dark Cars – Clueless Owner Looking for Advice

GREAT website here. This is my first post.

I just bought a 2004 Sienna. It’s dark blue (almost black). And my next company car will be a 2004 Grand Prix. Black. I’ll get it in about a month. (I’m in sales. My employer gives me a leased car every three years.)

I am mostly ignorant of paint care. I run the cars through the local machine wash every couple of weeks. The speaker announcement says, “approved by BMW, Mercedes ...” etc, so it can’t be bad, right? My cars are garaged all the time, and don’t get very dirty. I know dark cars are more difficult to keep nice, but when they shine they look great.

Can anyone direct me to a good thread, or to a good web page, on how to easily keep dark cars looking good? The Sienna is huge, and I am not sure if I can bring myself to hand wash it. The Grand Prix is my primary car. But it’ll be gone in 3 years. I’ve got a 9” orbital polisher that I’ve used twice in the five years I’ve owned it. I'm thinking about using it more often.

Please don’t flame me. I’d love to pour time into keeping these cars perfect. But with four small kids and a busy job, … it won’t happen. And I'm too much of a cheapskate for regular professional detailing. I’m looking for a few good pointers. And this looks like a great place to get it !!

Read through the detailing and autopia university forums first and also download the e-book (about $10 if I remember right). That ought to answer most of your questions so if you have anymore, they will be more specific.

That will be my pleasure. My favorite so far is the "At the car wash today I saw..." thread on horror stories.

A good thread on black is "Black Car Pictures" in the Detailing section. I know that some of the best threads on discussion boards can get buried. So if any black car enthusiasts have other favorites, please post!

Welcome to Autopia! Blegh, a Sienna... (Slightly envious Odyssey owner, here )

I, too, have a dark, dark blue/black minivan, and it's a PITA to keep clean. I'm not too anal about the car - it has a few swirls here and there, but I try to keep it washed and protected.

Good tutorial on washing: http://www.autopia.ws/articles.php?articleId=9)

BW - Thank you for the links and the suggestion on synthetic sealant (whatever that it is :-) ). I look forward to learning about this stuff. Right now all I know is PC=Porter Cable!

Don't be envious with an Odyssey. It's a great minivan and has been the class leader for years. Several months after I bought a 99 Sienna (in mid 1998), guess what hit the stores? The all new Honda Odyssey! FYI, Sienna now has a great site like OdyClub, it is SiennaClub.org.

Look here for all the http://www.autopia.org/display.php?file=acronyms.htm acronyms.

to Autopia

If you are going to use Zaino you may want to top it with a carnouba product after all the layers. My favorite is P21S. Goto Zaino web site and you will learn about the layers.
The carnouba will give some deep to your paint looks. If you want to stick only with Zaino it is ok too.

You will find tons of information here and you can make an educated decision.

My black Grand Prix gets nothing but Zaino.

A polymer sealant is a good solution for you if you not into a high-maintenance detailing style.

Sealants can last over 6 months, if kept clean and garaged.

If you want to spend 10 minutes, once a week, try Quick and Easy Wash. 10-minute car-wash in a bottle.

A lot of Autopians love it and its a real time-saver.

Do a search on QEW.

Thank you everyone for the links and tips. Jeese, I gotta crawl before I can walk. So regular dish soap isn't always great for cash washing? Dang. "Quick and Easy Wash" sounds good to me.

And thank you Bill for your signature links - I just discovered clubgp.com! (Did I say I was clueless?)
