What kind of clay is in a Clay Bar Kit?

I was at an art store the other day and noticed that there were these little $0.59 bars of clay that looked exactly like what was in the kits they sell nationally. So, it got me thinking... Is the clay that's in the kits the same stuff as in the art stores? Clay is clay for the most part (ok, raku and porcelin are different types...).

Thoughts?

$4.00 = Bottle of Quick Detailer +
$0.59 = Clay Bar =
$4.59!!

Vs. the $15-$20 kits!

Ry.

The way that automotive grade clay handles the dirt is much different than the way that super sculpty or your regular poster tacky stuff handles it. There is a thread in here somewhere where someone tried using that poster clay stuff and posted their results (no pun intended ).

edit: Found the link I was talking about.

Like Jngrbrdman, automotive clay is made to handle the dirt it picks up.

It would be safer just to spend the extra $10 and know it is meant for cars instead of trying to save a few bucks when it could cause more damage than it saved.

Auto clay is synthetic, total man made. The machine that makes auto clay costs about 1/2 million dollars. The clay is never touched by human hands. I do not know for sure, but model clay may be organic or earth based and this is certainly nothing you want on your paint.
