Removing paint from vinyl

Anyone have any suggestions as to how I can remove paint from vinyl trim pieces?? Whoever painted my car, before I bought it, wasn't to careful about masking the door jamb trim pieces. I tried using a magic eraser in a very small spot on the bottom and it took off the shine on the vinyl - so that's a no go.

By the way, this is 40 year old trim from my '68 Chevy.

I've heard that laquer thinner and a soft bristle brush, like a toothbrush, will do the trick and wont hurt the vinyl. I've also heard that a product called Goof Off also works wonders on something like this. Of course you should try an inconspicuous spot while you test it out. Good luck!

i would say goof off as well or there is a milder version called goo gone or something like that.

I'm sure you can get the shine back once it is cleaned up and protected.

Re: Removing paint from vinyl

What you might want t do is get some black vinyl dye and just re-do them. They'll look like new then and it will probably be easier than getting the paint off.

Goof off and a terry cloth did it.

Thanks!

dschribs, send a PM to Greg Nichols. He has a link to some stuff that is made to restore/recondition old rubber trim. It looks like really good stuff. Even though you've gotten the paint off, you might want to consider the reconditioning system.

Edit: Found Greg's post...
