I've learned lots from this forum and would like to share a tip I picked up elsewhere - when vacuuming carpet/upholstery using a shop vac remove the filter (more HP) then fill the vac's tank about 1/3 full w/ water. This will bypass the use of a pleated filter ensuring a better filtering system, pet hairs and other air borne particles won't suffocate the paper but will be trapped in the water.

I've tried that with my 12 gallon vac. Removed the filter but i think i only filled it about 1/4 or 1/5 of the way. The finer dust particles just came in and right back out of the exhaust. I'll have to try filling with more water next time.
