Re: Post how much you charged?

Pricing depends on alot on your area, skill/knowledge levels as well as types services offered.

Detailers in large cities that do great work can charge much more. Detailers in small cities that do great work probably won't have enough clients willing to spend the big bucks for there work.

Detailers able to perform quality paint correction without buffer trails or holograms will be at an advantage as they have more to offer then just a good detailing and cleaning.

Personally, I have just a couple simple detail packages that start at $175-$250 (which typically take me 3-4 hours to perform) and for paint correction and show car prep I start at $75 per hour. Figure most cars take me about 8-10 hours ($600-$800 average) to correct paint at the basic level of tollerance. For show car prep, I require a no time limit so I can be exact and make every aspect of the car perfect, typically a good 25-35 hours ($1500-$2700 average).

To be honest, I do not see a lot of detailers charging this much for paint correction (just a few) so I would consider my pricing on the high end. I do loose a lot of business due to the higher pricing too. fyi.

Each detailer has to decide what they value their services at then multiply that price by how many hours it takes you to perform a givin detailing process and that will help you to determine a pricing guide. As you gain experience, skills and knowledge you should become a better quality and more efficient detailer and then start to re-evaluate your pricing again to match your quality or work.

Josh

Re: Post how much you charged?

Josh is spot on. I think it completely depends on your area. Dallas is so much bigger than Lexington (Where I live). Josh would probably go broke charging that much in Lexington, due to lack of clients (But not lack of money, as Lexington is a very rich city per capita). It also has to do with cost of living. Lexington is dirt cheap to live in compared to Dallas, New York, L.A., etc.

I think it's great that you guys charge that much. I mean, your work is fantastic. I think if I could average $500-600 per detail, I'd probably quit my real job. Thanks a lot, you stupid BS in biology....a lot of good that's done. Hahahaha!

Each "man hour" is charged at 75/hour. So a 10 hour (20 working hour) job would be roughly 1500 dollars. I know Paul Dalton charges about 185 US per hour for his time, so for less than that you get two experts, which IMO, makes us a bargin. Also, being that we are booked 5 weeks out right now (and getting further and further out by the day) we will probably look at increasing our rate to 85/hr in the near future.

This may be a stupid question, but who is Paul Dalton? I'm assuming he's a well known detailer??

Re: Post how much you charged?

Thanks, Shine. As soon as posted my question, I thought, "Why not google the guy?"

Silly me. I saw the website...pretty crazy stuff. I'll probably never see a Veyron, let alone detail one.

I don't charge. I'll ask a favor for a buddy, and then I'll pay him back with a nice detail on his car as payback.

When you hear about detailers charging such large amounts you need to consider two things:

1. The reputation that the detailer has established for themselves and

2. Where they are

Guys like TH0001, Scottwax, JoshVette, Rydawg and others on here have been detailing for years and have developed impeccable reputations due to their experience and talent. When you build that type of reputation, customers who expect and can afford top end results will pay for such expectations.

On the other side of the coin is location. If TH0001, Scottwax, JoshVette or Rydawd were to live here to Louisville, KY (or Lexington, KY as EisenHulk mentioned) they would not be able to charge the rates they do now, there simply are not enough people in the Louisville area willing to pay those kind of rates for a car detail regardless to its quality. Being in SouthEast Ohio, my guess is location will be a hinderance on your income generating ability.

Re: Post how much you charged?

the hardest part i have is getting customers..my work is great, way better than any detail shop in town and area for the most part..but once u mention a price like 250, for a full detail, light correction, like swirls or minor scratchs and a thorough interior cleaning, taking me anywhere from 8 to 12 hours, there ready to walk away, some do, but being times are hard now i will lower the price , cut back a lil of the work i would do,just to make something cause i can use it most hte times but when they see my work there in shock, and thrilled that i did detail ther car and i try explaining, it can even look better, but they wont pay over a certain price...

im only a weekend warrior as i dont have enough clients to quit my day job, and sad enough ide only need to make 150-200 per day to get by with out my day job, and still its hard , i go weekends with no detailing work and it sux, really brings me down the one thing i love doing and would do it till i fall a sleep with the buffer in my hand and i just cant get enough interest in my area to stay busy at least saturday and sunday..
