I find it to be gentle and not strip was and create excellent lubrication, in fact some of the best i have seen. The suds it creates do not go away for a LONG LONG time. I have literally washed my car as it starts to get dark at night, and the next morning the suds are still on the driveway. It really is amazing how long they last.

I've taken pretty bad grime off cars with 901 though, so i think he'll be good. It is on the pricey side for OTC, but it's as good as anything out there that costs more.

I don't think it will take off tar or backed on bugs really well. You may be better off geting a good APC (or bug and tar remover) and just pretreat the bad areas. Then you could wash with the soap you have.
Also if the car looks like it tooka mud bath your best bet might be to go and use a coin-op PW to get the really nasty stuff off, then take it home and wash as normal. It can go a long as to preventing wash marring, and that will always put you ahead of the game.

If you're doing wet washes, there are a lot of good auto shampoo products, make sure you use one - BUT, I am an Optimum No Rinse (ONR) convert and you really should explore ONR as a very good, very 'green' car wash method....Imagine getting your car cleaner than it's ever been (with shine) using only 2 gallons of water and a bio-degradable product!
