Metal polishes, abrasive or chemical?

Are metal polishes abrasive or chemical? If they are chemical, how do they work and what is the best way to apply them?

Re: Metal polishes, abrasive or chemical?

any of the metal polishes i've used were chemical. the best ones i've used are English Custom Polish brand...they are pretty much watery in consistency. i'm not up on the ingredients, but i'm sure others can help out in that area.

Re: Metal polishes, abrasive or chemical?

I believe all regular metal polishes are abrasive.

There are non-abrasive tarnish removers for some metals, and there is also electropolishing for some others.

Re: Metal polishes, abrasive or chemical?

So if they are abrasive, wouldn't you have to work them in like a regular compound/polish?

Yes, that's right. I've not seen any "wipe-on, wipe-off" metal polishes; they all have to be worked.
