Optimum: To Hyper or not to Hyper...

... that is the question.

I recently finished up the last of a very big bottle of #83 DACP and I'm in need of a replacement polish.

I like the way DACP works, however I don't like it's dusting and the fact it gums up the pads about 1/2 way through the car. I have some Optimum Polish, and really like it, but I feel it's too mild to replace the DACP.

Should I get the Optimum Compound or Hyper Compound? I was inclined to lean more toward Hyper as most say it has a good bite but finishes down quite nice, this sounds a lot like DACP. The "regular" compound seemed to get more negative reviews than good ones and seems to be an akward middle between the Hyper and the Polish, overlapping into both a bit. I need something with a decent amount of cut since I do most of my work on hard German paint but don't want the dust and hassle.

Re: Optimum: To Hyper or not to Hyper...

I think it depends more on the type of tool that you will be using. When I was just using the PC I ordered OHC and OC. Coming from the SSR line I found the Opt. products to be a major PITA. I beleive that using the PC it is not very easy to get the polish to break down. I ended up putting my Opt. products on the bottom shelf and didn't touch them again until I bought my rotary. Now I LOVE my optimum products, with the rotary you get the extra long working time that seems to be the hallmark of the line, and I finally got the results that I had heard about with Opt.

Of course this is just my opinion based on my own experiences. Others I beleive have achieved fantastic results with the PC and optimum. Just not me.

I can't tell much difference between OHC and OC to be honest..both work great. If you want to try before you buy and are up this way I can give you a little sample if you like...

Re: Optimum: To Hyper or not to Hyper...

The Hyper Compound will finish down very nicely. I have never tried it on a darker color car, but on lighter colors I have been able to go directly to LSP after OHC on a green pad.

OHC on a yellow pad via PC has been very effective at removing some severe defect with one pass. You can work the stuff forever, and it will not dust at all.

If I were going to purchase just one product I would definately take OHC over OC.

OHC or HTEC- HTEC seems to break down better by PC from what I've read

You need to crank up the PC to 6, when you using OHC.
Thats how I use it when Im using my PC.. But on a rotary it works pretty good like around 1200 rpm.

Re: Optimum: To Hyper or not to Hyper...

I mostly use the rotary for this level of correction but would like to have the option of the PC as it's much less nerve wracking.

I think I'm just going to go Hyper.

Lightman: Thanks for the offer, where is "up here" out of curiosity?

Re: Optimum: To Hyper or not to Hyper...

Oh woops, I forgot my location wasn't on there..shaker heights..east side . I have both if you want to check em out.

I agree with the above poster..if I'm really going after paint correction I will use oc or ohc but with the rotary...the pc has pretty much been reserved for final finish polishing in my garage.

Hyper is a great polish. I am sure you will like it.

Offtopic: What gun is that in your avatar? It looks like the one Castor Troy used in "Face Off".

I also couldn't tell any difference between OC and OHC, and didn't find the OHC to be super-aggressive, but I have the older versions, and IIRC they have both been reformulated.
