Trying to do a full detail on a black wrx

Didnt know which subsection of the forum this would belong to so here goes:

I just recently bought a 2007 Subaru WRX Sedan Black and it has tiny swirls on the paint that you see when you look at the light reflections under a bright light.

I was thinking that this is the process I would use and could use any pointers on detailing as I am vague on the whole complete process of it to maximize shine and durability.

1. Wash car
2. Clay Bar w/ Quick Detailer such as NXT Speed Detailer or Mothers
3. Polish by hand but need ideas on a great but not too expensive polish for a black car
4. Read a lot of LSP products so basically a wax and then a sealant wax?

Basically I could use a whole refined process with a PC and clay bar full detail process and what products I should buy for black paint to get that wet thick look that also lasts as I will be detailing about every 1-3 months.

Also after doing a full detail say around 2 months later I want to do a touch up, do I just wash the car and spray some quick detailer and buff and then do a wax such as zaino or what?

as a wrx owner myself, I can tell you that even though Subaru doesn't have very good paint, taking out swirls by hand is a major pain. The route I would take (and eventually did) is get a dual action polisher such as a porter cable 7336 or DeWalt 443. Sure, they'll cost some extra up front, but I made the money back in a month doing a couple of friends cars.

For actual polishes, I would reccommend either Poorboys SSR's or Optimums polishes. The color of the car you have will show swirls easily, so you'' know where you stand while you work.

After you are happy with the swirl removal, you can use a carnauba wax or sealant. The general concensus is that a carnauba won't last more than a month, sealants should go 3 or more months. If you choose a wax, I'd recommend looking at Natty's Blue (by Poorboys), it looks great on darker colors. If you decide to go the sealant route, I personally have had good luck with the Duragloss system. Its fairly inexpensive, and is available at local CarQuest stores.

After your car is topped with a wax or sealant, I would wash at least every other week. If you're on the duragloss system, you can layer AquaWax after each wash to maintain your sealant protection.

Wow thanks for the insight so 1 thing I was confused about was, if I go the sealant route I dont do the wax ? Im a little confused

you can layer a carnauba over a sealant, but some find it unnecessary. You can use Natty's Blue, for example, to change the look of your sealant base, because it tends to darken the finish. But you can't apply a sealant (in most cases) over a carnuaba, because the polymers won't crosslink properly. Whatever looks better to you!

06 owner here! The paint is soft enough that Optimum Polish will probably be the most abrasive you'll ever need to go, unless you wash like a gorilla.
