J, most shy away from wool. That decision is obviously your own.

Body shop supply stores have all the wool pads anyone could ever want

Re: where to buy wool pads?

I've had good luck with Lake Country's CCS wool pads. I've actually been on a wool kick lately - I *hate* compound gumming and splatter with a passion, and I've been finding that wool/op cuts pretty well without the headaches of a compound - it leaves some hologramming, but that all comes out easily with one pass of the PC.

This was an awesome statement! Basically only you and David Feramoni have been positive on wool pads (what is a CCS wool pad ?). I was just thinking about wool pads today and have a question.
I know it is all right to use 6.5 inch foam pads with a 4 3/4 inch backing plate (like from Auto Geek), but how about wool? I have 2 6" wool pads with Velcro backing ( Wolf Gang from AG). Will they work fine with a 4 3/4 " backing plate or should the Backing Plate be larger?
I ask this because the sheep skin is a "lot" more flimsy than foam pads, so does it need a backing plate more closely cut to the diameter of the sheep skin ?

I'm an advocate for wool as well as long as it's used properly. Don't let it make you lazy cause it takes out a lot of the extra work!

Re: where to buy wool pads?

I use wool to cut paint all the time and have been for 15 years. The key is to use a light polish. I like Presta polishes the best for rotory and wool. I always finish with foam either rotory or pc. You get the best results fast and easy. You can use OP with wool, but OC is too rough to begin with unless you really really need it.

The dangerous part of wool is the compounds that some use. Wool with the right polish is safer then a foam cutting pad. Back when I had a shop I had guys detailing crappy used cars, they would damage more cars with foam. They key is to keep it simple with wool and keep the speed simple too.

Foam is the best finishing tool though. It will take out every little wool mark easy and the gloss will just gleam.

Remember this 2 step

Wool makes it like glass
foam gives it the clarity

Re: where to buy wool pads?

I bought my wool CCS pad from ProperAutoCare.com ... it works great with my 4ish inch backing plate.

Re: where to buy wool pads?

I'm glad to see I'm not alone in using wool. That's all I had to work with ~25 years ago and I still use it quite often in certain applications.
