Exclamation Meguiar's Backing Plate Problem

I bought my PC from Meguiar's before I found Autopia and learned that there were other options. Anyway, I was just using my Meg's backing plate with a 7006 pad, running at 6 (!) for a few minutes, and I noticed that pad looked a little funny, so I stopped the machine. The foam on the backing plate was a little puckered in a couple of spots, as was the cutting pad, so I pulled it off and found it came off much more easily than normal, and although cool on the car side was hot on the velcro side.

The heat from the PC had transferred to the backing plate, causing apparently permanent deformation to the foam in the backing plate, which reduces the contact with the buffing/cutting pad, and also the velcro on the pad seemed to be detaching.

First of all, maybe this is why some users report problems with the velcro coming off of the pad, second, has anyone else experienced this, and third, what are the recommendations? I really haven't had any problems till now, seems to be cuz I cranked up the speed.

As an aside, Griot's, which also sells a premium PC, seems to take a swipe in their catalog at what I guess is the Meg's backing plate, inferring that the heat will transfer to the paint, which I didn't experience. My problem is that I am going to wreck my pads and backing plate and be stuck unable to finish my roof!

Hey Mike- I'm pretty sure Rod addressed this today, he seemed to think that running the PC at 6 would damage the velco/adhesive. I have read that other Meguiar's personel also dont recommend running the PC that high for the same reason. However some people on here claim to run it at 6 without any problems. Yes, makes me wonder a bit too.

Probably better off not going up to 6.

I was really wondering if someone was going to comment on their experiences with other brands of backing plates/pads.

Mike,

You can try backing plates from Lake Country or Auto Quip (the one sold by CMA and I think TOL)

I've got the backing plate that came with my PC when I ordered it from Autopia, so I am not sure which one it is. I also have noticed the backing plate and pads get hot, so halfway through, I remove the pad and let it cool for a few minutes. I also initally had problems with the adhesive being weak on the Meguiars pads, but the last batch I bought have proven to be much better.
