Seeking additions/corrections to abrasives list

Hello people,

I am seeking additions or corrections to this list. I would also appreciate suggestions on how to make the list more accurate or useful, without becoming unwieldy. If you actually want to discuss the usefulness or validity of this list, you can do that on the other thread, titled "Is there an Autopia "abrasive scale"?

Disclaimer:
Cutting action can differ significantly based on application (e.g. hand use vs. rotary). This list is an approximate indication of the cutting ability of polishes based on the circumstance they are most likely to be used under. Products are ranked by scratch removal ability, not filling or "cleaning/oxidation removal" ability. Consider the error to be plus or minus one ranking. This list is propagated by a rogue group of Autopians and should not be seen as general consensus of the community as a whole. Comments are welcome for additions or corrections to the list.

Hey guys, we need more entries near the middle of the list, with some manly cutting power.

KAIO (amongst others) is difficult to classify. Since it's primarily a chemical abrassive, it's cutting action is realitivily mild in terms of swirl removing, but it's ability to remove oxizadation is formidable with a PC ... perhaps as high as a 4 or 5.

MPPC should be at least a 5.

Where do 1z polishes go on this chart?

Here's a general guideline:

D2 Special Cleaner* - ~11 - Not available in N.America
Extra, Intensiv Paste* - 8/9
Paint Polish, Hochglanz Polish* - 5/6
Metallic, Express, WaxFinish* - 2
WaxPolish Soft -1/2

Thanks for pointing out the special case of these chemical cleaners. This list is defined as the ability to remove scratches, either through abrasion or dissolving. AIO might be great at removing oxidation, but as far as I know, it cannot remove scratches. In my experience with MPPC, I feel the same way. I don't think it can remove anything but the smallest scratches, even with a PC. I believe it only has a small amount of abrasives. For now, I will leave AIO and MPPC at their current spot on the list, unless I get outvoted, and people do say that MPPC really can remove scratches. However, what I will do is put a note next to these two products pointing this out.

Note that the 1Z Paint Polish is listed twice, once in "L6" as "EINSZETT Paint Polish" and again in "L5" as "1Z PP". I dunno which one it should *really* be in; it's a perfect example of the "+/- one level" magin of error. I guess I'd put it in 5, *I* believe it's a little milder than the 3M products in 6 (and I use it *after* those products when doing a multi-level polishing job).

ON the topic of AIO, while *I* can't get it to mechanically/abrasively remove marring, other Autopians *whose opinions I respect* have. Hence I'd call it a *VERY* mild abrasive. It's *NOT* as aggressive as 1Z MP, but, given the categories, I believe it's in the right place. And FWIW, I don't see AIO as having any real "filling properties" either.

As Poorboys still sell SSR2 I would like to it added to the list, probably at 4 or 5. Also would Poorboys Pro Polish or Polish with Carnuba rate a 1 or 2 ?

Yes where is SSR2 on the list? I've seen it do some pretty good swirl reduction. No clues on how SSR2.5 will do, but I hear its similar to DACP

I think you have to move 3M 39009 and 39109 from level 4 to 3

I would agree with this, I've used both in progression and the SMR (39009 for me) doesn't seem to be as abrasive as the Scratch-X. This is by hand, the difference is more pronounced by machine.

At first I thought it was, but it wasn't removing the flaws, simply filling them.
