What is best to clean a car cover?

A friend of mine was asking me about cleaning his car cover, but I've never owned one so I don't feel qualified to tell him exactly what to use to clean it. He was thinking about washing it in the washing machine. What are your thoughts on that?

I told him a convertible top cleaner may help, but I am not sure if that would actually get the dirt out of the fabric. Any tips would be appreciated, thanks in advance!

I bought my cover directly from honda, It is the blue kimberley klark material. Not sure which one, but it is pretty nice. The directions say to only clean it with fantastic, I have no idea why, but it has always worked.

Maybe do a search here on "car + cover" I read lots of those threads before buying mine from California Car Cover, and generally they just recommended regular maching washing.
