61 VW detail; August Contest; Exterior

August Contest; Exterior Detail

My son, on 20 July, purchased a 1961 VW which we found in February under a shed in Rocky Mount, N.C. The car had been parked there since 1970, was last started in 1982, and had 32k actual miles on it. He was visiting us from Providence, R.I. from 7 July until 3 August. He brought the car here on 20 July. The paint is original! Our time was very limited, most was spent on mechanical and electrical reatoration, including an engine and brake rebuild. Detailing was quite secondary and the products used were only those obtained locally (AutoZone 1/2 mile away) except for Z-1 (I was out of ZFX and had some old Z-1 left), Z-2 (again left over from last fall before Z-2PRO), Z-6, and Z-7. The lack of detailing supplies for this kind of problem is because I never before had the occasion to clean up one in this shape.

Initially the car was brought home in a rainstorm, then washed with diluted Purple Stuff. Given a Chlorox rinse, vinegar rinse, then washed again with Z-7. A PC (orange pad) was used with McGuires Mirror Glaze 3. Lack of time since he was leaving on 3 August excluded more attention so it was then Zaino'ed.

Specific problem areas: everywhere and everything.

This entry was occasioned because of the encouragement from other Autopians; we would have preferred to have spent at least another week on it (and not in July and August!!).

He plans further detailing and restoration in RI.

Before, in Feb.

HRP -

One note, if you use the edit function, just insert those photo links with the codes on either side of the link to make them show up in the post....much easier for viewing.

You brought the paint back like that with Meguiars #3? I'm guessing the pad did most of the work because #3 is at the low end of the abrasive scale. Looks like under the rust the paint was in somewhat decent shape since the car was sitting in a shed all those years.

Nice find!

In the unlikely event that we win, he's going to spend part of it on new pads for my PC. He spent 8 - 10 hours just buffing and wore out a couple of pads and went through at least 2 bottles of #3. And we were all surprised at how well it turned out. Remember, we were severely limited in time and in cleaners.

Unlikely? I'll be voting for you and I even entered the contest!

Very nice, it doesn't even look like the same car.

Mty son thanks y'all for the applause.
If you look closely, you'll see the red 1969-70 inspection sticker in each of the pics. We're just as shocked as you are because it really "doesn't look like the same car" A few more pics to get you to drool (as I, his brothers and sister did) over his find, including a pic of the dash. Note the "radio delete" trim. We didn't have time to do the interior. It is supposed to be white instead of "cigarette smoke" and "tint of time" tan

Am I the only one that thinks that brown stuff was more like algae and dried/caked on pollen or organic stuff, rather than rust?

No your not. I see what appears to be mold or maybe even moss growing on it. I most definitly see rust. Look at the wheels and at the lights.
I am still impressed with how well you cleaned it up HRP.

I'm sure there was organic growth on it. It was in a dark shed for 30 years. I would be willing to wager that over 30 years some moisture got in there too. Then poof! A perfect petri dish in the hot, humid summer.
