April Entry: 1990 Red Miata "Renewed" *56k WARNING

I PM'ed two mods and with no response, I started a new thread for my entry for April since I was not able to move my orginal thread the Xtreme Detail Section.

Here is my original thread: http://autopia.org/forums/showthread...4&pagenumber=1

The Victim: A poorly taken care of 1990 Mazda Miata with 80k. Owner told me he hasnt washed it in over 2 years and it sits outside all the time.

Diagnosis: Badly oxidized paint. Heavy Swirls Paint failure on front bumper and side mirrors. CAKED on wheel brake dust

Treatment: All four wheels took me 1 hour and 30 minutes to clean. I used Dawn Wash, Multiple application of A2Z, and #0000 Steel wool with gloves.

Here's the before of the Passenger's side front wheel:

Here is the after of the same wheel:

The exterior was in pretty bad shape. The owner added that hard top on there about 6 months ago. He had bought it used but it wasnt in bad shape like the rest of his car.

My process:
1. Wash with NXT wash
2. Clay entire car with Mothers Gold Clay
3. Wet sanded two areas of paint transfers from hitting pole on the front side and rear side bumper with 2000 grit sand paper and polished the sand marks with Menzerna Power Gloss with a yellow cut pad via Rotary @ 1500rpms
4. Entire car got Menzerna IP via Rotary @1500 Rpms via Orange Cut pad. Some areas needed multiple passes. I also had to clean the pad every 2x2 section to clean it free of paint transfer and oxidation gumming up the pads.
5. Entire car got Menzerna FPII via Rotary @ 1500 Rpms with white polish pad.
6. I used Collinite IW845 as LSP via PC with grey finish pad.
7. Glass Cleaned with Stoners IG
8. Tires got NXT insane shine
9. Wheel wells got AA

Here's some befores:

More Afters:

After everything was said and done. I could not save the front bumper and side view mirrors. The paint was completely dead. They did brighten up but were still dull and swirled.

My losses were two pads....may they RIP

The owner was astonished by the results and after 8 hours of work so was I

Well it was discounted since I know the guy being that he is an Ex-co-worker. I charged him $130. Non-discounted price i would have charged at least 250 and up. This project made me realize to charge a little more for single stage paint since they seem to ruin pads quickly. Out of the 4 pads I used, my polishing and finishing pad were toast!

PM me with any work you've done to your RX. I'd be interested to hear.

Lol....I see the $100 free stuff as compensation to my low balled prices Im giving my fellow associates. I think I will take a break from the Extreme Detail contest, unless I have something that will top the Miata. (Given the Miata's condition I kind of see that hard to do for myself.)

In the next few weeks I will be doing a full extreme detail on my car, but its not to make a "Dramatic" improvement, just want to get close to prefection as a I can as the condition my car is in is not bad at all.
